Athletics

What a day Tuesday! Warm without being roasting, the weather smiled upon us as we took over the Sportsbowl for the day. I love school athletics for many reasons...but largely because it challenges children and allows them to better themselves. How far can I throw, can I jump...how fast, how high? All of it challenging, nothing easy and requiring a large amount of grit and resilience. Big thanks to our parents who helped out on the day, and to all the parent supporters who came down to cheer the kids. Makes for a real atmosphere, makes the event very ‘real’ for the kids.

Connect, Inspire Learn: Student Led Conference

An absolutely amazing day here at DPS last week. Over 200 students from different schools came to lead learning for others, to share their knowledge, to connect across schools and inspire each other. The feedback has been incredibly positive...from students involved, teachers who came and principals of our local schools. I’m very proud of the fact that Douglas Park had a lead role in developing, organising, hosting and running this conference. I believe that education is about creating better communities, helping kids give back, to give service to society. This conference was one of the ways DPS is giving back, we helped give this learning opportunity to over 200 students, to 11 schools. Shaun Harkness lead this, and deserves accolades for it...and the whole school pitched in...whether it was Kowhai and Kahikatea heading off site for trips (to allow the conference space to work in), Gemma McPhail coming in to volunteer, Rata and Rimu having to share the school with 200 extra kids, and our staff share our staff room with all the visiting adults. Service to others is important, and this was DPS in service to the education sector of Masterton (and the outlying rural schools). Look forward to the 2020 edition!

Are you leaving us?

That time of year again when we start to plan home classes and teaching teams. We’ve had a bit of on influx of enrolments (which is great) so just seeking information about whanau who won’t be with us for 2020. We know about our fabulous Year 6’s, but have any other families had a change in circumstances, shifting towns/regions, moving house and won’t be with us for 2020...we’d love to know! Helps us to better plan classes for next year. Flick an email to office@douglaspark.school.nz

Whanau Hui

Amazing evening last night with our Whanau group learning about tuna (eels), and seeing them being fed. Massive thanks to the Paku whanau for having us, a big turnout of our parents and kids. Instantly the kids (and adults!) were captivated...right by the stream edge watching the eels, getting up close. The feeding was a real sight...see the link below to a video.
