A focus this term for DPS has been developing powerful relationships with our learners. We have allowed time for this to happen, taken chances to engage with the kids outside of class time, sought and gained information from you at home and put systems in place such as being available from 8.30am for you as parents and to interact with the children.
The power of relationships cannot be overstated and often research points out that the quality of the relationship between teacher/s and students is the single most important factor for success in schooling.
The video below, I’ve shared this before (and still paints a great picture as to why education should change, and why teachers are rejecting the offers from the Ministry), ends with a very poignant message (skip to 22.15mins). John Campbell says that schools should focus on the 3R’s (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic) and Nathan Wallis (Neuroscience Educator) agrees beautifully;
Schools should focus on the 3R’s...Relationships, Relationships, Relationships...the quality of the relationship between teachers and students is the single most important factor for success.
An interesting article came through my Twitter feed a few weeks ago and I shared with staff. Sharing here as well, it has some great takeaway messages for us as educators and parents:
Read the article here and I hope you have a great time over the break with your children.
You’ll be aware through the media that the Primary Teachers and Principals have voted to reject the latest offer from the Ministry. The offer was essentially the same as we rejected last year, the only difference being a payrise being brought forward a year for some (not all teachers) and an additional 1/2 day classroom release a term. This equates to an extra 15 minutes a week...so not even an extra minute per child a week.
We now have a Paid Union Meeting early in Term 2 to discuss the next steps for industrial action. NZEI continue to negotiate with the Ministry in the meantime. We don’t have much information as yet, but there is a strong possibility of a ‘work to rule’ partial strike. This means that the work we are contracted for, within our working hours, will be completed...but nothing else. The education sector prides itself on all the additional opportunities we provide for children...cultural & sporting for example...and how we make ourselves available outside these hours...contactable via email, parent evenings, Learning Conversation evenings, BoT Meetings, FODPS meetings...these fall outside of the contracted working hours, but we do them for the benefit of the kids.
As always we will keep you up to date with information as it comes to hand, and appreciate the support given already and the support to come as we struggle to gain recognition for our profession, and for what we need to provide the very best education for our learners.
Great article in the Times Age last week, recognition of the hard work put in by Joe, Mr Blue and the boys.
The Board have opened up 30 places for out of zone enrolments for Terms 3 and 4 this year. If you know of someone living outside of our home zone thinking about attending this school...they will need to get an application in. Please pass on this information to them. An ad will be going into the local papers at the end of the month. Students who are pre-enrolled will get the information and applications close 10th May.
29th April 2019 Applications sent to Out of zone pre enrolments
10th May 2019 Applications close 3:00 pm
Once again, a massive thanks for your support of the school. The final draw will be held tomorrow and announced at celebration time. We have 3 prizes...perfect for the upcoming break:
Donations are set for the year at $50 per child ($12.50 a term) and can be paid to the office by eftpos, cash or cheque or through internet banking at 03 0687 0310653 00
Massive thanks to FODPS for the Easter Raffle and to you...our wonderful community for supporting it. The prizes are amazing and again...the money coming in will directly benefit the kids. FODPS support the school by funding EOTC experiences for all 4 teaching teams across the year, supporting events such as the Tararua Challenge sports exchange & they’ve been working away upgrading and beautifying the pool...all things that bring joy and enrichment to children.
The AGM was held this week and we have new and returning members leading the team forward. I would like to acknowledge and publicly thank Amy, Olivia, Sally and Derek who have stepped down from their active role. Thanks for all you have provided to our school and our learners.
To the team going forward I look forward to what you achieve and to the joy you will undoubtedly bring our great DPS Kids.
Thank you DPS Whanau and families for getting in behind Movin’March. As the weather is turning please continue to actively encourage your children to walk or wheel to school from one of the DPS Travel Pou. Add a raincoat and encourage that independence. Teach your children to cross the road at the pedestrian crossings between 8.15 and 8.40 am every day.

Taine, Carlo & Silas have been playing league for the Wairarapa Coyotes U11 team in the Palmerston North competition every Sunday since February. This is their third year they have played for the coyotes and so far have only lost to one team this season. They have a home game on Sunday the 28th April down at Pioneer, would be great to have some local support! Time TBC
This term has been a busy term for the Councillors. We started off as two Lead Councillors and later in the term we were joined by 12 more Yr 6 Councillors who were nominated by their peers.
We meet every Monday at lunchtime and discuss our leadership roles as well as organising events around DPS.
Check out some of the things we have been up to this term...

Since 2009 the youth outreach team known as 'Souled Owt Kids Club' has been operating like an after school program. We engage the tamariki in activities that teach good morals, values and life lessons that will give them the skills to build healthy relationships. We also have fun playing sports and listen to good music with healthy food and everything is free. We usually only advertise this to the local neighbourhood that surround the Margaret street park but this year with the influx of children showing up with parents donating time and food we decided to send out a invite to the entire community to share our blessings. attached is a poster with all the info.
I am going to Japan for School (MIS) and I am selling my home made Harry Potter wands for $5 each as part of my fundraising efforts to get there.
Order yours today by texting mum on 0276003680.
Thank you very much for your support.
Kind Regards
