Our Vision: Together we Nurture, Explore and Create for a Better Future

Last week I wrote about our Vision…but when I say I wrote, I really mean, I got Artificial Intelligence to do that for me. The last 6 months has seen the rise of AI chatbots, in particular ChatGPT…an artificial intelligence you can have a conversation with, and interact with. You can ask it questions, and it will (very quickly) provide you with a detailed answer. Last week I asked it to write about our vision, to describe each part…and it did a pretty decent job of it. The new tech has got some in the sector worried…but I believe it is something that needs to be embraced not banned. Similar fears have been held in the past around tools like calculators, YouTube and Wikipedia…but these are just tools that can be used well in a class. AI is no different. We already have staff experimenting with it…and a great example of how it can be used to support learning happened last week. A teacher had a reluctant reader who wasn’t interested in the book the group was going to be reading. So the teacher and student fed some ideas into ChatGPT about a story the child would like to read, and the AI created the story. They then asked it to make the story at a level appropriate for the students reading age (which it did) and then used a separate AI to generate images to go with the story. This is powerful stuff…personalised for that student, engaging and a great example of using this tech to enhance a classroom's programme. Our vision is driving towards children making a difference, creating a Better Future…and that means being open to new technologies and seeing past the barriers, to seeing the potential.

There will always be the need for the human touch, a teacher in the classroom to Nurture children's talents…and to finish today I asked the AI to explain how it could work alongside teachers. Its response below:

Having an AI alongside a human teacher is a total game-changer! With AI, students get a personalized learning experience, real-time feedback, and help with language translation. It can adapt to their individual needs and make learning so much easier. But let's not forget about human teachers - they bring some serious skills to the table that AI can't replace. They've got empathy, creativity, and critical thinking on lock, and they're able to build personal connections with their students that really make a difference in their learning and development.

Bottom line? AI and teachers make a killer team in the classroom. AI can bring the technology and personalized learning experience, while human teachers bring the emotional connection, mentorship, and guidance that really help students thrive. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but when they work together, they can provide a well-rounded and comprehensive education for students that's second to none.

Non-Uniform Day for Tinui

On Friday we will be having a non-uniform day with all money going out to Tinui School, as well as selling ice-blocks. The cyclone has done quite a bit of damage to the school, with water getting inside all the classrooms. A bunch of schools are doing the same which will be a great help…the Ministry will be covering all of the damage costs…the need to have stuff…but I doubt they will cover the nice to have things (teacher resources, games, plants, gear etc). Gold coin for non-uniform day, although feel free to donate more if you wish.

People are doing great things out there…I mentioned the PowerCo workers last week who slept out in their ute in the floods to be able to keep working at restoring power to the community, over the weekend a considerable amount of food and much needed household items were donated/dropped off and this week I saw that one of our DPS parents is chipping in. Michael runs Wai Spark (Archie’s Dad), and he has offered his time to Tinui residents…both over the phone to discuss electrical issues, and in person with him and his team heading out to do voluntary work for people. Great stuff, and a great example once again of people stepping up and giving back to the community.

Paid Union Meeting - Reminder: School Closing Early

Reminder -  that school will close at 1.30pm on Friday March 3rd to allow teachers to head to their Union meeting. I appreciate that this will be an inconvenience, so I thank you in advance for supporting us with it. This may seem like an odd time to be negotiating teacher salaries given the sheer scale of the money that will be needed to deal with the effects of natural disaster Cyclone Gabrielle…but this simple fact below shows the effects of the natural disaster that our profession is in the middle of:

The sad reality is that the profession of teaching is no longer attracting people, and those that we do attract…the job is challenging enough that many leave within 5 years.

We need this to change…the profession is a beautiful one, our kids deserve the very best people in front of them…and teachers deserve the very best of conditions to keep them at the chalkface. It will be interesting times ahead.

Making and Creating

DPS is a play based learning, maker school…and I love seeing this in action! The richness of the learning is awesome…even things that seem simple. Chloe and Ataahua came to see this week with a crown they had made for me. Seemingly simple…but the fine motor skills needed to design and cut the crown out, the precision of lining up the pink dots on each point, use of the stapler to put it all together. Some great physical skills. They gave me a title…King Mr Sinton (I quite like that) and had to write that on the crown, so that brings some academic learning into the mix. But on top of that is the Creativity needed to come up with the idea, the Perseverance needed to take the idea and make it reality and the Communication/Collaboration needed to work with each other on the project. Some life long, deep skills and values are being developed.

What's happening at DPS?

We will also be selling ice blocks for $1 at lunchtime to raise more money!!

We will accept any donations on behalf of Tinui.

Thank you for your support.
