Dear Community Members,
Please join me in thanking and wishing all the best to our dear colleague, Aicha El Moujghit, who is retiring at the end of this month. I hired Mrs. El Moujghit in 1995, and since then, she has been a wonderful, dedicated teaching assistant during her twenty-nine (29) year tenure. We wish Aicha a wonderful and healthy retirement.
We had the pleasure to receive on campus once again writer, Tahir Shah, this past Tuesday, January 23rd. Tahir is a former CAS parent. His children, Timur and Ariane, attended CAS from 2006 to 2013 before moving back to London. One of Tahir’s books, the Caliph’s House, is an amazing book and one we certainly recommend. As stated by Goodreads: In the tradition of A Year in Provence and Under the Tuscan Sun, acclaimed English travel writer Tahir Shah shares a highly entertaining account of making an exotic dream come true. By turns hilarious and harrowing, here is the story of his family’s move from the gray skies of London to the sun-drenched city of Casablanca, where Islamic tradition and African folklore converge–and nothing is as easy as it seems…. No doubt Tahir feels part of this beautiful culture. Please visit our gallery in this edition for more pictures about Tahir’s visit to our Lower School.
Let’s all support People to People for their Blood Drive campaign. The Blood Drive will take place on Saturday, February 3rd at CAS from 10:00 to 15:00. Let’s save a life with every drop and join us once again. Last year, we had the participation of approximately 60 donors. We hope more will join us for this year’s drive. For more information about eligibility to donate blood, please check out the following website: https://sites.google.com/cas.ac.ma/casblooddrive2022/home.

When it comes to negotiating events , Grade 5 students Mehdi Tazi, Sofia and Lina Chraibi, Yasmine Kamlichi and Alya Benzekri are excellent at communicating about the event(s) which they are planning to organize. All benefits will go to a charity. I hope students from Grade 4 to 6 will join them at the Movie Night this Friday, February 2nd. Details have been shared with parents and students alike.
We hope you have saved the date for the second call of the Ordinary General Assembly that will take place today Monday, January 29th at 18:30. Your participation in school matters is important.
We would like to inform our parents that we are in the process of hiring an Upper School Principal and searching for a new Lower School Principal as Ms. Phillips will, unfortunately, be departing at the end of the school year. Please do take the time whenever you are on campus and see her to thank her for her contribution to CAS.
Last but not least, we would like to present our sincere condolences to Nayel Kabbaj (class of 2016) for the loss of his father, Mr. Mohamed Kabbaj. Mr.Kabbaj was a very active member of our Community, assisting the Board of Governors with financial audits and sound advice for financial matters. Our thoughts go to Nayel Kabbaj and his family.
Sincerely yours
John Randolph
School Director
I hope 2024 is treating everyone well! Recently students in grade 2-6 completed the Winter MAP tests in Math and Reading. The results are impressive!
46% of LS students who took Winter MAP performed in the 61st percentile and above in Math!
53% of LS students who took Winter MAP demonstrate above average and high growth in Math!
47% of LS students who took Winter MAP performed in the 61st percentile and above in Reading!
42% of LS students who took Winter MAP demonstrate above average and high growth in Reading!
This data tells us many things but some highlights include:
The programming, immediate and long term interventions, and high teaching and learning expectations have an impact on student achievement and growth.
The Lower School expectations and efforts to reach and teach every child makes a difference! This includes strong teacher collaboration during grade level common planning times and the push-in support of our Student Support team.
Data review and analysis contributes to individualised instruction. Our high quality Lower School staff use a critical approach to review and analyze test data in order to appropriately group students for small group instruction to improve skill weaknesses as well as enrich or extend skill strengths.
Building a culture where students are active in their learning and goal setting give them ownership and contribute to achievement and growth.
Parents being active in their child's learning and progress is important too. THANK YOU for ensuring your child has nutritious food, plenty of sleep, and attends school regularly and on time in addition to supporting them to do their best!
Parents of students in grades 2-6 be on the lookout this week or so for your child's Winter MAP tests report.

The Upper School Student Council treated our students with a surprise performance by a dakka marrakchia band during a Friday afternoon Barbeque hosted by Mr. Randolph. Students enjoyed the music and food while socializing.
This week starts the IB Mock Exams by our Seniors who have the opportunity to practice for their final exams later this year. This marks an important opportunity for these students as they reach the final weeks of their years at CAS.

US Principal
Best of Luck to our seniors who will have the IB Mocks next week!
These exams are essential for all IB candidates (diploma or certificate) for two primary reasons. One reason is that we use the mocks as training for the rigorous IB Exams we hold in May. The second one, a crucial one, is that these exams give seniors the opportunity, in a friendly environment, to understand where they are in their preparation for the exams and improve their performance accordingly.
Congratulations to our IB Diploma candidates who completed the Extended Essay!
The Extended Essay (EE) is an independent, self-directed research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. As part of the IB Core, passing the Extended Essay is compulsory for the candidates aiming for an International Baccalaureate Diploma. By writing it, students develop valuable skills in information literacy, conducting research, referencing, and citing.
Congratulations to their supervisors, who did their best to support them during the process!
Many exciting titles are on our student's essays, like :
To what extent was French colonialism the cause and escalation of the Vietnam War?
How does Coca-Cola's marketing strategy for its Coca-Cola beverage contribute to its continued success?
En quelle mesure Nicole Avril parvient-elle à transgresser le genre biographique a travers l’histoire de Flora Tristan dans son roman “Brune”?
How did social hierarchy influence tomb visuals and artifacts related to eternal life beliefs in Ancient Egypt's New Kingdom?
La Diplomatie à Travers le Football au Maroc, un exemple du rayonnement Sociaux-Économique du Maroc en Afrique et dans le Monde ?
Congratulations to Juniors who successfully passed their first trimester in the IB program! They settled their IB courses at HL and SL and started the work on their extended essay by attending a first introductory class before the winter break. On February 12th, during the Advisory, we will organize an “EE Seminar Cafe” for juniors, allowing them to see examples, hear from successful seniors, and ask any questions they need.
Grade 10 students and parents attended the first IB Information session on Monday, January 22nd. During the session, they received a general presentation of
the IB program
the requirements for awarding an IB Diploma
the IB Course Certificates track
the criteria for enrollment in an IB course
The next step for them is to attend the IB Fair: Discover the IB Courses that will take place during the Teacher-Parent conferences on February 21st.
The IB program is rigorous and challenging, but once at the University, the reward will come when our students realize how prepared they are to succeed academically and not only.
We are here to challenge them, sometimes push them, but always support them when needed!
Meeting Live Authors increases children’s interest in books, helps them understand how books are produced, and boosts the confidence of aspiring writers in schools.
It is with great honor and pleasure to welcome the Author Tahir Shah to CAS. Tahir is an Author, Storyteller, imaginer, Adventurer, and Enthusiast. The students were so engaged, inspired, and touched with a new appreciation for reading. They were so excited to hear Tahir’s amazing stories and enrich their lives for the better. Tahir Shah was so impressed with the level of the questions he was asked.

Last week, Grade 8 went on a field trip to the Museum of Moroccan Judaism, in Casablanca, with Ms Chiara and Mr Murray. The students discovered the preamble of the Moroccan Constitution of 2011, as well as the arts and crafts of the Jewish communities of Morocco that the museum hosts. They had fun exploring the rooms of the museum in a treasure hunt that brought them all around... including to the garden, for a quick lunch before going back to school!

This past weekend, the American School of Marrakesh hosted the MASAC soccer tournament, attracting the enthusiastic participation of over 600 athletes. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the boys and girls soccer players from grades 6, 7, and 8 who significantly contributed to the success of the event. Their exceptional performance and sportsmanship throughout the tournament were truly deserving of praise. Despite facing formidable competition, our boys exhibited unwavering focus and rose to the occasion. They performed at an outstanding level, securing victories in all their matches, qualifying for the final, and ultimately clinching the championship. The girls displayed admirable skill and determination, earning a well-deserved second place after competing against strong opponents. The COBRAS team demonstrated remarkable perseverance and effort in overcoming multiple minor injuries, showcasing their tenacity and dedication. We extend our sincere gratitude to all the athletes for creating a memorable and spirited weekend. On behalf of CAS, I would like to express our thanks to the coaches for their commitment, dedicating extra time and effort to coaching, chaperoning, and providing support throughout the tournament. A special thank you is also extended to the parents for their invaluable support during the event. Their encouragement and involvement greatly contributed to the overall success of the tournament. We appreciate everyone who played a role in making this weekend a remarkable and enjoyable experience. Congratulations to our Cobra Boys for their 1st place and to our Cobra Girls for their 2nd place.
