Dear Community Members:
It’s an honor to be part of our beautiful institution! Being active, curious, engaged and creative are main traits that distinguish us! From academics to graduation to unique experiences and activities that become even more valuable during these unprecedented times. Please make sure you are up-to-date about these wonderful happenings in which our students and staff take pride! We are also proud and thrilled to announce that our 2020 Grade 6 class finally had the opportunity to celebrate their graduation. The diploma and award distribution ceremony took place Monday, December 14th at 2:00 pm. Due to the persistent pandemic crisis, and the Governmental Protocol, parents unfortunately could not attend. Thanks to Technology, we provided a life stream so that parents, relatives and other members of our community could share this memorable moment with our Graduates!
With Winter Break upon us, I assume families will be travelling and interacting with others. Therefore, we shall hold all classes online from Tuesday, January 12th through Friday, January 15th and resume the Hybrid program on Monday, January 18th. This is designed to prevent, as much as possible, the transmission of COVID to our community members after a break, because we do not have control over where students have traveled nor how closely they have followed mitigation protocols. Speaking of calendars, we would like to again inform our community that we will have school on January 18th and May 31st, days that show on the school calendar as days off.
Sincere condolences to Meriem Zaim-Oudghiri, class of 2001, who has tragically lost her child this past week-end. Our thoughts are with Meriem, her husband Fourat, daughter Alya and the entire Zaim-Oudghri and Radhi family.
We wish you safe holidays and see you all back in 2021!

Since we started school this year, we have had 28 and 12 positive cases among our students and staff consecutively. These cases occur at separate dates. Most of the students are usually asymptomatic and each fulfill their quarantine period as per the guidelines the local authorities ask us to follow to keep our population safe and out of danger.
I would like to briefly reiterate our set procedures in face of Covid-19:
Step 1: The parent or member of staff informs the school Nurse
Step 2: The nurse informs the divisional principals
Step 3: Parents in the cohort group are informed and the group itself is sent home for quarantine with a letter from the School Director.
Step 4: The infected student will be admitted to class after quarantine pending a negative Covid-19 test result.

As you know, students in grades 2-6 took the Reading and Math Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests in late November. We are sending home the family report in a labeled, sealed envelope this week. Overall, I am pleased with the results.
The Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) out of the United States is a world-renowned, research based, not-for-profit organization that produces assessments to help educators measure growth and proficiency of their students. They are the creators of the MAP test.
In the spring, NWEA researchers used data across several years to make projections about learning during the time of Covid and school closure. Their initial predictions were that there would be learning loss, that it would be much more significant that learning loss associated with summer break, and that the greater loss would be in math. Taking the research and projections into account, we adjusted the Lower School timetables to add more instructional time in math.
I am happy to announce that the majority of students made gains between Fall 2019 and Fall 2020!
MAP data is used for teaching and learning in numerous ways. It allows teachers to understand where your child’s skill strengths and areas for growth are. It enables us to see where our students fall among the norms of other same grade peers. We are able to pinpoint exact areas for skill development in order to differentiate in the classroom.
Please be on the lookout for the Family Report this week

Dear Community Members:
As always, thank you all for your support and the work you do with our students!
The national Honor Society induction took place on Wednesday, December 16th. The event was recorded and shared with all students and families. Thank you to all that contributed to its tremendous success!
Speech and debate under Mr. Money’s lead:
Three schools held a small speech and debate meet last weekend, CAS, ASF, and ASI. This is an entirely online format requiring only access to a stable internet connection and a quiet location to login from. The topic of debate was about requiring voting in a democracy, and the speech events are largely related to current events. Our goal at CAS is to make every student successful academically and engaged globally!
MAP testing: MAP testing is over! Kudos to Mr. Guttridge, supervisors, and the IT department for their dedication and hard work! Few students have been scheduled by Mr. Guttridge for make up, which is a great news during these hard times. MAP results will be shared with families after winter break.
Please be reminded that US students/ parents will sign up for a monthly declaration of intention for their school modality (On-campus/ Distance learning) starting from January.
Keep safe and Happy Holidays

Despite many set backs (google being down worldwide at the time of the LIVE ceremony launch) and change of plans due to the current pandemic, our Grade Six class of 2020 graduates were celebrated this past Monday, December 14th 2020. It was a memorable ceremony that was broadcasted live on our Facebook page. Though Grade six parents could not attend physically, they were with us in our hearts and spirits!
We would like to thank the PTC members who gifted our graduates with unique sweaters that we have seen them wear the next day! That alone is a proof of their gratitude and most probably enjoying the "cozy" feeling it brings during these rainy days! (scroll the pictures to see)
A big thank you goes to our organization committee for all of their support in making this event happen and with great success!
Parents of Grade Six Graduates (current Grade 7) please stay tuned as we will deliver a USB stick of the entire ceremony and pictures for each student once it is ready.
We wish these new 7th Graders many years of academic success and memorable moments with us here at CAS.
May 2021 Examination Session update: As an IB World school, we strictly follow the official communication coming from IB. Despite many rumors circulating on social media, there is no plan to cancel the IB Exams in May 2021. The IB organization takes into consideration the world pandemic situation and adjusts the examination elements. Parts of the components were removed from most subjects, and the examination schedule was updated to reflect these changes. The Internal assessments (now in progress for our seniors) will be all uploaded for external marking that takes place along with the internal evaluation. The Academic Integrity becomes the most important as no student work can be submitted without the teacher's authentication. Using Turnitin to check for similarities is not enough. The direct interaction with the teacher/supervisor must take place regularly.
Please spend 5 minutes watching the video prepared by IB students winner of the "Academic Honesty" contest organized by IB a few years ago.
DP Evaluation 2021: Our work on the self-study continues. Last Wednesday, during the PD afternoon, time was assigned to complete Section C - Curriculum in IB subjects groups. Despite a large amount of evidence we need to collect, teachers are confident they will complete Section C by June.
Though we were not able to have an opening ceremony as we usually do, our students still participated in our annual olympics! It is always great when a bit of the "old normal" continues during these unprecedented times! Thank you to our wonderful PE team, a special shout out to Ms Hala and Ms Dahbi !
In light of Covid-19, the National Honor Society Induction took place only this past Wednesday December 16th. Slight alterations to the usual ceremony were made to respect and provide our students with a Covid-19 safe induction. We would like to thank Ms. Rana Haroun, NHS advisor, for organizing a smooth and safe event. It was broadcasted LIVE on our instagram page. So if you have not seen it, follow us on instagram to not miss out on future events! In addition, the ceremony has been recorded by a professional team, and will be shared with our community as soon as we receive it.
Congratulations to our NHS students!
Mr. Rose's grade 11 IB English students created digital portfolios of their work, designing their own websites using Weebly as their digital platform. Students curated exemplars of their work that reflected mastery of the learning objectives for the first term. They then metacognitively reflected on each piece, assessing their strengths and areas of growth, as well as setting goals for the winter trimester. Students then presented their portfolios to their parents, who were given the opportunity to provide feedback on their child's learning. They will continue to add to their portfolios over the course of the school year.
Digital Portfolios highlighted this week:
This year has been most troublesome and there have been many changes to our regular school schedule, extra-curricular and sporting activities that we offer. We want to advise everyone that we shall be making two changes to our school calendar and, therefore, we shall be holding school on Monday, January 18th Dr. Martin Luther King Day, and also on Monday, May 31st US Memorial Day. Both of these days are noted as holidays in our school calendar, but we shall be having school on both days. We wanted to let you know this in advance since we go on Winter Break this Friday for three weeks.
Please refer to this revised calendar! It is also available on our school website should you wish to print it or refer back to it (or take a screen shot!).
Ms. Haroun organizes regular university virtual visits. These are open to students and parents of grade 10-12. Please look out for emails announcing future visits and sign up! It is a great opportunity for students to learn more about university options and the university application process.

Santa's elves have been working in the background...pulling many all nighters to put together a creative and crafty gift for our students! Inspired by the Advent Calendar and the 12 days before Christmas, our PTC moms have designed their very own Advent Calendar! These were delivered just in time, 6 days before Christmas:) Each child received a box that contains 6 small boxes, each representing a day...in each box..... a surprise !
Kuddos to these moms who have designed more than 400 boxes!! It take a lot of time, devotion and love to do this!
And because these special angel moms love to spoil our students, they treated them to a memorable rhythmic time with Casa Favela Group.
Thank you for all that you do for our community and children!
NHS Arts & Craft Virtual Night was a great success! We were happy to have more than 30 people join Mr Wommack in his creative workshop! Parents and students created Christmas cards using coffee as paint! (see picture). If you are interested in joining future Craft Nights- stay tuned for future announcements! Thank you NHS for organizing such a nice and original virtual event!

"Do you own a telescope or binoculars? CAS needs your help!
Upper school science teacher Collin Cherubim is organizing a Star Party to share the wonders of the cosmos with students, staff, and families. Mr. Cherubim will take us on a journey through our solar system and beyond (safely outdoors). But he can't do it without your help! To make our Star Party truly spectacular, we need to host at least one telescope, and ideally binoculars.
If you are interested in supporting the event and are willing to loan your instrument(s), please contact Mr. Cherubim as soon as possible: ccherubim@cas.ac.ma. Your support is appreciated!"
Thank you!
Collin
What a treat!! Kindergarten students found caterpillars and they have been following their development for days now from caterpillars to cocoons. Our young scientists will forever remember this scientific life time experience! Life and death always find their way!
Can you guess how Mr Wommack uniquely created this mask in the form of a spider? or may be, it's just a Biology lab experiment that accidentally got out of its cage and attacked Mr. Wommack? Any guess?
Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish community. "Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, called a menorah (or hanukkiah)."
"My living room is a little Christmas habbous and it soothes my soul (I'll attach a picture... seriously I have more rugs than pairs of shoes ). I still have Moroccan tea at least once a week, and the middle eastern grocery store down the street sometimes sells msemen (which I excitedly buy, but it's not nearly as good as it is in Maarif or the CAS cafeteria, oh my gosh...). Some of the CAS students send me emails every once in a while; they are so incredibly thoughtful. I'm lucky to have taught them and I can't wait until Covid ends so I can come back and visit everyone!"
