Dear Parents:
It is always a pleasure to connect with each one of you. As we celebrate with our students the one hundredth day of school either virtually or Face-to-Face, these two past weeks have been extremely busy ones. In this edition, we have a lot to share with you!
CAS Mission Statement
We sincerely thank the community for its feedback on our revised school Mission Statement. This is part of our NEASC accreditation process. In general, the feedback has been very positive. Most respondents have agreed that the new mission statement is concise and encompassing in that it lays out a clear roadmap for our school to maintain its outstanding position as one of the most prestigious American international schools in Morocco. Some respondents have also emphasized that our school should make sure that we are aligned with the new mission.
As a result of the feedback, the review team will now finalize our mission statement prior to sharing it with our Community.
Speaking of the NEASC accreditation process, the school has been commended for the progress it has made in terms of the Curriculum, the physical infrastructure, and Covid 19 protocol amongst other commendations.
Ramadan Food Drive 2021
The holy month of Ramadan is fast approaching and will most likely begin either April 12th or April 13th. We take this opportunity to inform our community that we are again launching our annual Ramadan Food Drive for our thirty six (36) Support workers including our police security team and the G4S agents. Many of our workers support an extended family and, for some especially during this pandemic period, they are the only source of income so any assistance will be most appreciated.
If you would like to donate, kindly find below a list of items that are a necessity to many of our Support Workers’ families:
Flour, Sugar, tea, coffee, olive oil, regular oil, chickpeas, lentils, milk, tea, dates, rice and honey.
We would like to organize and distribute the Ramadan bags on Wednesday, April 7th, so we would appreciate your donations by March 31st. Just remember any gesture, however, small or large makes a difference! Thank you for your kind consideration in this most important matter.
Change on the Board of Governors
It is with a heavy heart that we inform our community that our US Consulate Representative on the school Board of Governors, Mr. Stephen Kochuba, will be leaving us in May for new endeavors. Mr. Kochuba joined the Board in 2018 at the same time as I. Along with our current Board members, we were beset with and faced many challenges and accomplished a great deal in the past two and one half years. We thank Mr. Kochuba for his valuable contributions, his genuine support and his civil disposition and we wish him all the best. On the other hand, we are happy to welcome and introduce to you our next US Consulate Representative, Mr. Alexander Black, who will assume his duties with the Board after Mr. Kochuba departs. Mr. Black has already attended one of our Board meetings and we, as a Board, are looking forward to working closely with him. As a United States Department of State Assisted School, we have always appreciated the support and sound advice of our Consulate General Representative to the board.
Grade 12 Graduation
We are a unique, diverse and caring institution at CAS. Our 2021 class will be graduating in May. We want to inform everyone that our Graduation Ceremony will take place Sunday, May 30th instead of Saturday, May 29th in order to respect the religious obligations of some of our Community members.
Covid 19 vaccines and updates
We would like to reassure our Community Members that our Senior Staff, those forty-six (46) and over, who had their 2nd Covid shot administered on March 10th (and I’m one of them) are fine apart from the regular side effects that are common for any flu vaccine. We are looking forward to having all our staff vaccinated. Nevertheless, our precautionary procedures and measures will not change and we will maintain the same vigilance until this Pandemic is in check!
Kid Proof Presentation and the visit of Dr. Driss Moussaoui
Last week, Ms. Racha Haroun, came to CAS and made a presentation about Kidproof , which is a Canadian child safety education provider and publisher that has spent the past 21 years perfecting child safety education and teaching it to millions of parents, schools, educators and children around the world. Present in over 28 countries, it has become the preferred partner and the most trusted name in child safety education. As an honorable guest, we had the pleasure to meet and discuss child safety matters with Dr. Driss Moussaoui, former CAS parent of three children, and Board Member. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Moussaoui who has been a wonderful resource since I returned to CAS. His advice and guidance regarding students’ issues have been extremely valuable. Thank you Dr. Moussaoui for your continued support of our students and thank you Ms. Racha Haroun for the excellent presentation.
“Protect ED is one of Kidproof's child safety education programs. It's a curriculum, from Pre-K to grade 12, that will be implemented in Morocco to provide students with the social emotional learnings and critical thinking skills they need to face the many challenges of today's world. With its safety, health, social emotional and growth based mindset education, it will support schools to provide their students with the knowledge they need to become confident, ambitious, successful and healthy citizens of the future”.
Randy’s Fireside Chats:
Our 2nd “Randy’s Fireside Chats” will start Monday, March 22nd according to the schedule shared with our parents. I am looking forward to these meetings as they are designed to check on each other amidst Covid 19. It is also an opportunity to share ideas and resources and to maintain our warm relationships.

“I feel like I should provide some context for my last post about favorite cities to live in. No, I was not inspired by a Buzzfeed post Memphis. A few years ago, while living as a high school chemistry teacher in Boston, the desk attendant at my gym randomly read me a little snippet from the book he was reading: Cosmos by Carl Sagan. I devoured the book that summer and went down a real astrophysics rabbit hole. I became pretty obsessed with exoplanets and the search for life beyond Earth.
Around that time I also decided I wanted to return to research and pursue another graduate degree. A PhD in astrophysics seemed like a stretch given my educational and professional background. I decided to go for it anyway. So I read papers, emailed professors to chat about their work, took online classes, taught myself data analysis techniques, took the general GRE and the physics GRE, and took a job to teach high school
physics, and later science department chair (which sounds a little fancier than it is).I applied to a small handful of super competitive astronomy and planetary science graduate programs in fall 2019 (why not go big if we're doing this thing, right?) and got rejected everywhere... I asked for feedback and they all said I lacked research experience in the field. So I asked for remote research opportunities. Last summer, an astronomy professor at Caltech and a planetary science/engineering professor at Harvard invited me into their groups. I spent about 6 months learning exoplanet detection and atmospheric modeling methods from them. Some of my work will be published in the Astrophysical Journal (hopefully this year). I applied to twice as many schools last fall and got several acceptances and fellowships to study exoplanets, astronomy, and astrobiology: CU Boulder astrophysics/planetary science, U Washington astronomy, Johns Hopkins Earth and planetary science, Harvard EPS, and UC Riverside EPS. This felt like a pipe dream a few years ago when I was inspired by popular science writers like Carl Sagan, and now I've
been admitted to some of the best astro research programs in the world... It feels pretty surreal. I'm a little excited!”
Usually I consider an anniversary as an opportunity for celebration- a marriage, the birth of a child, the start of a friendship, the purchase of a house. This Saturday marks one year since the closure of schools in Morocco when Covid began to massively change our lives. Some anniversary, huh?
When schools closed no administrator, teacher, parent, or student realized the impact it would have on us professionally and personally. Most of us thought it would be a temporary thing...a couple of weeks, tops. Boy, were we wrong.
Once I realized the impact Covid would have on every aspect of our approach to education, I devoured every piece of information and professional learning I could get my hands on. I stayed up late into the evening attending webinars through Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), and Northwestern Education Association (NWEA) looking for information, collaboration, and solutions. I worried about the social-emotional strain the pandemic would have on students, parents, and teachers. I joined additional FaceBook groups for school leaders to gather any ideas to guide the staff on student learning and support during an unprecedented time. I regularly Skyped with my administrator colleagues around the world to question, wonder, and troubleshoot (and even cry). I met, albeit virtually, with Lower School staff to offer support and was, in turn, supported by them; your children are so fortunate to have such wonderful teachers.
In many of these webinars, posts, and discussions a major point of concern was learning loss that our students might face. I know it was a concern for parents as well. How could we possibly make up for missed school? How will we build foundational skills? Where are students going to get exposure to English?
In a letter to parents about one week into Distance Learning, I cited the example of Hurricane Katrina, one of the most damaging hurricanes to hit the United States. They had to close schools then without even the ability to offer online school. Despite an intense disruption in the school year, students, over time, began to meet learning targets and meet standards to much the same degree pre-Katrina. I assured you our kids would too. I know we, as educators, are experts at closing learning gaps. We do this every year, why would 2020 and 2021 result in anything different?
I quickly changed my mindset from what was becoming doom and gloom that came with the projections and assumptions around learning loss to one of recognition and hope. Think about the wonderful human beings our children are becoming as a result of school closure due to the pandemic. We are developing growth minded, critical and creative thinkers; our children are resilient and adaptable problem solvers. Attributes they were forced into developing...that may not have come as quickly had the pandemic not occurred. Our kids navigated attending school online with but a moment's notice...they are tremendous young people more than capable of overcoming obstacles. I am not overly worried about our students and learning loss. With what our children have gained from this experience, it's just a matter of time before any possible learning loss will be turned into gains.
The past year challenged me professionally and tested me personally- I know 2020 did all community members. Something I am happy to share as I'm recruiting potential teachers is how proud I am to have been a part of CAS during unanticipated school closure and the way in which we came together as a community. I could not imagine having gone (and continue to navigate) this with any other team.

Dear Students,
This is a reminder that you must register for the May SAT as soon as possible, in case you have not done so yet. If you have taken the December SAT, and are planning to take the March SAT, taking it once again will give you a chance of increasing your score. As you are half-way into your first year of the International Baccalaureate program this year, we want to ensure your success in this program so you can get into a competitive university and pursue your passions.
All grade 11 students must take the SAT at least twice this academic year (three times, if necessary). Waiting until grade 12 to take the SAT will be detrimental to your university applications as you might miss some important deadlines and score lower on the SAT.
While it is true that many universities went test-optional for the current graduating class (Class of 2021), there is no guarantee that it will remain optional for your class (Class of 2022). In addition, current admission results for the Class of 2021 show that students who submit a strong SAT score were more likely to be admitted than those who did not. A strong SAT score will make your application more competitive.
The upcoming date is May 8, 2021. You must register for the May 8th SAT as soon as possible, as all seats at CAS might fill up fast. Please note that we are not allowed to reserve seats for CAS students and that registration occurs on a first-come, first-served basis. Here are the instructions to register for the SAT.
Students must study for the SAT to optimize their scores. Please find resources to help you prepare for the SAT on our website (you will need your CAS login information to access the website). You can also review the SAT STUDY GUIDE.
Do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions about testing or university admissions.
Sincerely,
Rana Haroun - College Counselor
