TESDA IX realizes full implementation of STEP Program in Zamboanga City

Spearheaded by TESDA IX Regional Director Lorenzo G. Macapili with the Office of the Regional Operations Division, the TESDA Regional Training Center, Senior TESD Specialist Geronimo A. Bandico and STEP Coordinator Crisanta A. Ambalit in coordination with the different Local Government Units of Zamboanga City, the Special Training for Employment Program (STEP) conducted in the different barangays in both districts of Zamboanga City have completed their respective Entrepreneurship and Assessment phases for Calendar Year 2014.

The qualifications/programs offered by TESDA form part of a vast array of entrepreneurial and service-oriented skills needs. These include: Test Repair Wiring/Lighting system Servicing (Leading to Automotive Servicing NC II), Perform Manicure and Pedicure (Leading to Beauty Care NC II), Perform Single Unit Plumbing Installation and Repair Maintenance Works (Leading to Plumbing NC II), Perform Facial Make-up (Leading to Body Massage NC II), Install wiring devices/Install Lighting Systems (Leading to Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC I, Process Food by Salting, Curing and Smoking (Leading to Food Processing NC II), Perform Body Massage (Leading to Beauty Care NC II), Plaster Concrete/Masonry Surface (Leading to Masonry NC II), Maintain and Repair Electronically controlled/Domestic Appliance (Leading to Consumer Electronics Servicing NC II), Service and Maintain Transport Airconditioning Unit (Leading to Transport RAC Servicing NC II).

The specialty training took place in the different barangays in Zamboanga City, in coordination with the Offices of Rep. Celso L. Lobregat for District II and Rep. Lilia Macrohon-Nuño for District I, with the objective of providing skills training opportunities for the beneficiaries in the barangays/communities to make them employable and productive. Beneficiaries must be at least 15 years old at the start of the training program and must be Filipino citizens. Benefits include free training and competency assessment, starter tool kits to be given to each trainee at the end of the training program and training allowance computed at Sixty Pesos (php60.00) per training day. All in all there were 484 trainees/beneficiaries.

The Special Training for Employment Program is a community-based specialty training program that will address the specific skills needs of the communities and promote employment, particularly through entrepreneurial, self-employment and service-oriented activities. Training programs are generally short-term and shall use the cluster of competencies prescribed in the Training Regulations promulgated by TESDA.
