The Zamboanga Academe-Industry-Government Core Group, chaired by the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority (ZAMBOECOZONE) Administrator Christopher Lawrence S. Arnuco, held its core group meeting at New Hall, Lantaka Hotel, Zamboanga City last February 25, 2015.

TESDA IX, represented by Regional Director Lorenzo G. Macapili, was invited to form part of the assembly to formalize a council/committee from the core group present at the meeting through MOA, MOU or other types of commitment. After the chairman asked the body for their inputs on the matter, it was decided that the group will become a committee with the ZAMBOECOZONE acting as the secretariat for the foreseeable future.

RD Macapili on the viability of the core group/committee: “This committee is unique from other groups because of the infusion of innovative projects… this will be a fertile ground for TESDA to be relevant in delivering services to the people.”

The most prominent issue discussed in the meeting involved the different mismatches of human resources in Zamboanga City and the region. The body also discussed the challenges, opportunities and motivations of the Industry, Academe and Government sectors. These included questions on the needs of the industry, the kind of skills needed, the qualifications of employees, the value of apprenticeship, learnership and on-the-job-training for graduating students, specifying and breaking down the data of the number of jobs needed and how the demand for jobs is being met.

The meeting was attended by the different agencies from the AIG sectors including DOLE, CHED, WMSU, ADZU, DTI and the City Government of Zamboanga.
