Background

Out of the blue, in Mid-August 2019, I got a call from an old trek friend, Prakash, asking if I was interested in joining a group of 7-8 people planning a drive tour in Zanskar, Ladakh, via the new route from Darcha (near Manali) to Lamayuru (near Leh). I quickly said "Yes" ... as I was desperate to break out of the Corona Lockdown, as the Virus risk had significantly reduced now.

He also mentioned that there was also 'back-to-back' Kashmir Lakes Trek planned (at the end the Drive trip); where some 4 regular trekkers were planning to join  after their Srinagar visit. I opted for that too!

The Kashmir Treks as originally planned was

TREK of 10 Days in Kashmir from/near Sonamarg:

1 SARBAL (9200 ft)- DURINAR MEADOW TREK-4 hrs

2 DURNAR MEADOW (11644 ft) DURINAR LAKE 1 (13681 ft)

3 DURINAAR 3 & EASTERN PINNACLE Climb -5 Hrs

4 DURINAR LAKE 1 (13681 ft) Sapphire Lake (14006 ft) Barfsar Lake(15104 ft)

5. SARBAL- SONAMARG- KULLAN (by drive)

6 KULLAN- ZEWAN-JERSEY MODE-GUMBRI TREK - 7 Hrs.

7 GUMBRI-Gumbarsar & Handilsar Lake TREK- 5.5 Hrs.

8. GUMBRI- Yemsar 3720M  & khemsar lake 3700M  TREK- 6 hours

9 Gumbri - KULLAN trek - and drive to SRINAGAR

As you can see there are two treks above. 1. Sarbal-Durinar and 2. Kullan-Gumbri-Gumbarsar. But during the actual trek 1 and 2 got interchanged in sequence. We did the Gumbri trek first. Later, I skipped theDurinar Lakes trek (as I was too tired from the stiff climbing  already done in the first trek). But the rest of the team did it. I have included some  pictures from the 2nd  Gumbalsar  trek as well taken by some of the other trekkers.

Brief Description:

The Durinar Lake Trek is unlike any other trek in Kashmir. Located near the serene destination of Sonamarg the trek takes you to three alpine lakes namely Durinar I, Durinar II and ultimately to Durinar III at 4600 M (15,092 FT). The trail starting from the village of Sarbal, often considered as the last village of Kashmir, is offbeat and rarely frequented known to only a few locals. The Durinar Lake takes you across meadows of Kashmir with a steep ascent to the final lake Durinar III which gives you jaw dropping views of Lidder and Sindh valley. The vantage point gives you unmatched views of the famous Zoji-La, Kolahoi peak and glacier, and numerous other peaks and passes of the Kashmir National Park. Presenting you a completely different settings of Kashmir unlike any other trek, the Durinar Lake Trek is one of kind with the three lakes located on top of each other. This trek is perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers alike.
