Saurashtra Coastal Tour by Car

Junagadh is an ancient fortified city. It has some very old buildings & street-squares, Uperkot Fort, and the stunning Mahabat Maqbara.

Porbandar on the Saurashtra coast between Veraval and Dwarka is mainly famous as Mahatma Gandhi's birthplace and where he lived till age six.

1st September 2005: 5th day >> Afternoon at Junagadh

I reached Junagadh by 1:00pm (from Gir Lion Sanctuary) and took a room in Hotel National, in Kalwa Chowk, in the heart of the city. After lunch went out and did a city sights tour by auto for Rs 60/- and saw Upperkot Fort, Darbar Hall Museum, Mahabat Makbara and Narsingh Mehta Chowk.

2nd September 2005 : Junagadh - Porbandar - Dwaraka

I left Hotel at Junagadh at 6:45 am and went to Girnar Hill (but then decided not to climb the 10,000 steps, to the top to see the Jain temples there) from a distance and then to the Ashokan Edicts; but that was closed so could not see the Rock Edicts of Ashoka. Drove on to Porbandar arriving there at 9:30am and first had breakfast at Swagat Restaurant and then went to Kirti Mandir by the coast; where the House where Gandhi was born is kept as a Memorial Museum.
