This is my Sgraffito Tile that is shaped like a peach with hexagons that have designs in each of them. There are lots of different patterns in this tile and I used clay and underglaze to make it. I love peaches; the food and the symbol itself; so I wanted to make something that incorporated that. I also love making patterns so I knew I wanted to add a lot of them. Originally, I was thinking of having just a mandala pattern across the whole peach tile, but I always do lots of mandala patterns so I tried something new which was using hexagons. My hexagons were going to be smaller, but I realized that I wanted them to be bigger since I didn't want to do a lot of fine detailing. If I'm being honest, I was not happy with how this turned out. This project was super difficult for me because every time I tried to scrape off a line while making a design, the black underglaze always chipped off. It was very annoying and it made me wish I picked a different design. I didn't realize that this idea was going to use fine detail and If I could revise my tile, I would definitely try to make a new design. I tried to touch up my tile by adding black underglaze to the parts that chipped off, but that didn't really work since those parts I painted on just chipped off in the kiln. I feel like our "scratching" unit definitely showed my weakest artwork. Our previous scratchboard project was also super difficult for me and I wasn't happy with the outcome. We are now working on stamping which involves scratching in a way and it's still not going great for me.
