Arrive Alive

Eyes on the Road

Digital Art

This is my project for the Joe Bornstein Arrive Alive art competition where I drew someone driving next to a graveyard with a sign blocking the road. I did this using digital art because I've only done digital art once this year and wanted to do it again, plus I felt like doing something more cartoon-like. I wanted to make the whole artwork a bit of a darker tone, so I used more musty colors to create a darker vibe. This is a serious topic, and I didn't think bright colors were suitable for this. I also thought about how I felt when I went passed graveyards, and it was always a gloomy feeling, so all the colors I used were very muted except for the red. I wanted to use red to portray, and alertness, as if the driver would crash into the sign and end up in the graveyard if they were not paying attention. continuing on with the cartoon theme, all the components in my artwork are pretty simplified. I still used some highlights and shading, but there isn't much detail in the car or background to follow that cartoon-like theme. When I went into this project, I wasn't sure what I was going to make, but I knew I wanted the point of view to be of somebody behind the wheel. I thought about how I was going to get my message across, and only thought of dark ideas because in general, this is a very gloomy topic, so the graveyard in the background is pretty fitting. Although my message is pretty straightforward, the point I am trying to portray which is staying alert and alive is shown clearly. Originally, I wanted the hand on the wheel to be a skeleton's hand, but when I tried to draw bones, I was not satisfied with how it looked, so I revised it and changed it to a human hand instead. I'm still really happy with how this came out, because I really like the simple look and the gloomy vibe it brings to be, which is exactly what I was trying to show.
