Observational Landscape Drawing

Oil Paint Sticks

This is my observational landscape drawing I made with oil paint sticks. I have never used oil paint sticks before, and to be honest, I'm not that much of a fan of them because they are very thick, so getting small details was hard, and also because they were very messy. I based my drawing on the landscape of the background of the turf entrance. I started out drawing in a rough sketch with a black oil paint stick and then started to add color, and finally detail. I started with the arch and I thought that would be the main focus, but my attention shifted to the bright colored brick wall that wrote "Falcon Pride" and I believe the colors bring the eye to that area first. I then went in drawing everything else I saw like the ground, back buildings, grass, trees, and fence. I wasn't necessarily paying attention to all the detail in the landscape, just the composition. I want to have every component I was seeing added to the artwork, and looking at it now I see I definitely could've minimized the reference I was looking at and drawn that instead, focusing on the shadows, highlights, color, contrast, and all other details. If I were to be able to redo this project, that's exactly what I would've done, but my intention of the project was to sketch a landscape, and I soon realized I interpreted the requirements wrong.
