Sustained Investigation #14

Color Pencil, Marker, Pen, Gouache
This is my 14th Sustained investigation where I drew Freeport Village Station using Color Pencil, Marker, Pen, and Gouache. My inquiry question is, "How can I use color and texture to concentrate on the emotions of landscapes?" For this project, I wanted to highlight the nostalgic feeling I get in the village station, as I have spent many moments in this place, especially when I was younger. My favorite thing to do on the weekends was to go out into town and walk around with my friends in elementary and middle school. I'd go into the stores and window shop, or buy the things I was saving up for, go to eat at Johnny Rockets or DQ, and end off in the Lindor chocolate store. As I've grown up, I've seen myself go there less and less, and I know that college is coming up, and I am going to be leaving everything behind. I wanted to represent those happy innocent times as a child in the village station with bright saturated colors, and add some additional darker, and grey streaks to represent the overcoming nostalgia I have and will be getting in the future. I started this project with mainly markers, and decided to switch to more color pencils for detailing, and ended up also using gouache for the white outlines around the buildings, and pen for some of the dark black parts and outlines of shapes. I really liked the washed-out effect the colored pencils bring, and I think it adds to the theme of nostalgia well. This kind of reminds me of a cartoon, which helps support my childish memories. originally, I was not happy with how this was turning out and I thought it looked very bland, and I went in with some darker colored pencil to add shading and I felt it helped contrast the whole piece overall, and make the work a bit more realistic with the blended colors.
