Freeport High School #1

Sustained Investigation #1

Acrylic Paint

11x16

This is my Sustained Investigation #1 where I painted my school using acrylic paint. My inquiry question is "How can I use color and texture to concentrate on the emotions of personal landscapes with mixed media art?" In this piece, I wanted to show the dreariness school gives me by portraying an effect of droopiness. I first started out sketching my school, then dividing my paper into sections where half showed reality and the realistic landscape, and the other sections were messier. I went into full detail with my paint on the realistic sections first, focusing on the highlights and the true colors of the building. I used those same colors on the messier sections and made all my lines curvy and squiggly to give off an illusion. I wanted it to look like something was off with the building, that it didn't actually look that way, that there was something wrong and I think I was able to pass off this effect well. After finishing with the painting, I originally had thin lines that sectioned off the parts, but I wanted there to be more of a focus on the divisions, so I made them thicker and began to shade in the messy parts. This gave it a darker aspect, bringing in that dreary effect I was hoping for. I was able to use texture with my neat straight lines, and squiggly lines. I was able to use color with my accurate pallette and dark shadowing in as well. I think I executed my inquiry question well in this project as it brings in a gloomy emotion to a personal landscape, my school.
