Find Your Voice

Abortion Voice

This is my Find Your Voice project that is 9x12 and I mainly focused on Abortion. This project relates to my life because I am pro-choice, and my artwork is based on this idea. For this project, I used acrylic paint, watercolor, and pens. I first drew and painted peas in pod to represent a fetus and decided to have a bright background because I wanted my artwork to look cartoonish, and I felt having a background that popped would help me achieve that. I then used gel pens to write reasons as to why woman get abortions in different colors like age, not being ready, unfit, etc and the words were still bright as well. The watercolor trail sort of represents a pea leaving the pod (fetus leaving the body). Last minute I decided to outline the pea in pink because I wanted a bright color to make the pea stand out, and I didn't want to use green because the pod was already green and I didn't want the outline to collide with that piece, I just wanted to make it stand out. My project evolved because I only had the idea of having a pea, and then later decided to have the waterfall trail and scattered written reasons when I felt like my artwork needed something to be added. Overall, I'm happy with my project, but I don't think the message is clear. On my two constructive criticism sheets, neither classmate knew the message. One thought it was about inner thoughts and the other thought it was about teen struggles. If I were to add more steps, It would probably be to make the message more clear by possibly adding counter arguments since people have two different beliefs of this topic, so showing both sides would bring out the message more clearly. I also would fix the way I added the reasons in the background. Instead of having them all scattered, I would have them in an order to make the whole artwork look more clean in general.
