Useful Disc Image Verification/Check Tools

Introduction

Here are some disc image verification/check tools I have found useful. See also: Useful Download and File Transfer Applications, Programs, Operating Systems, Software.

Download and File Transfer Applications

When you have downloaded a disc image for a Linux distribution (or some other large/important file), you should verify the disc image by calculating the checksum or hash sum before burning an installation disc. HashTab understands for example CRC32, MD5, SHA-1 and sha256sum. For example sha256sum was used by Fedora distributions in 2012. openssl, md5 and sha1sum are Linux, UNIX and OS X programs. sha1sum was released for Windows in 2004. OpenSSL binaries are also available for Windows.
