.AIFF/.AU/.CAF/NeXT/.SD2/WAVE: Soundtrack Pro (Mac): File: Save a Copy As.
M4a: QuickTime Player (Mac): File: Export: Format: Audio Only.
Soundtrack Pro: Process: Adjust Amplitude.
Line-In program
Input from: Built-in Microphone: External microphone
Output to: Built-in Line Output: Line Out
Comment: microphone will go out to line out also.

Introduction
For example WAV and AIFF sound formats have file size limits (Audacity: Recording length).
WAV size limit: 2 GB (absolute maximum 4 GB).
FLAC size limit: none (with Windows 2 GB).
Precautions
Before closing an Audacity project, export recording to lossless audio file (for example FLAC).
System Preferences, Energy Saver: [ ] Put hard disks to sleep when possible.

Using LineIn and SoundflowerBed = not necessary, sound is louder without!

Don't forget
When you have selected to make a screen recording, press the little down arrow to select the external microphone.
Put the "Digital Out" cable to "Digital In" input in the same machine.
With System Preferences check that the volume meter is moving when you are testing with YouTube, etc.
First
Install and start LineIn, SoundflowerBed, and Audacity.

[...] ...Software: try "Software" instead of "Hardware" if you have problems...
