Useful Audio Applications

Introduction

Here are some audio/sound/music applications I have found useful. See also: Audio Application Settings, Media Players, Programs, Operating Systems, Software.

Summary

Audacity is for recording and editing sounds. GarageBand is for creating music and podcasts. CoolPlayer, ModPlug Player and VOX are audio players. With CoolPlayer you can convert from MP3 to WAV. With VOX you can listen to FLAC files. iTunes can be used to play music and videos, rip CDs, and you can also for example convert audio files to AIFF files, which are used as system sound files on OS X. With ModPlug Player you can listen to various music formats (AMF, MOD, S3M, WOW, WAV, etc.). QuickTime can be used to record audio or you can make a screen recording in addition to playing music and videos.

Limitations

In general, depending on the file system and audio software, AIFF/WAV audio recordings are limited to a file size of 2 GB/4 GB because of AIFF/WAV file size limitations.

Recording limitations

"In GarageBand 4, the limit has been increased to 9,999 measures, giving you 5 hours, 33 minutes and 16 seconds of recording time at the default 120 bpm tempo, or up to 16 hours, 39 minutes and 48 seconds of time if you reduce the tempo to the minimum 40 bpm." (podcastconsultant.net)

"In versions 1 and 2 of GarageBand a song can be 998 measures long, in GB3 a song can be 1998 measures long, and in GarageBand '08 (And Later) it can be 9,998 (these are hard limits and can not, at this time, be extended with any type of workaround), how long that translates to in time depends upon the tempo of the song (more beats per minute uses up those measures faster) and Time Signature (only in GB 1 & 2)."
