Mandriva Installation Settings

Introduction

Here are some of my Mandriva installation settings. See also: **Create Disc Image**, Driver Installation Settings, Operating System Settings, Operating System Installation Times, Operating System Requirements, Operating System Startup Times.

Mandriva Linux One 2010 (GNOME 2)

Language:

English (American)

Timezone:

Europe: Helsinki

Keyboard layout:

Finnish

Note to myself: turn off screensaver at this point and do not "Disable touchpad while typing".

Live Install icon:

The DrakX Partitioning wizard (depends, one or multiple OSs)

(*) Use the free space on a Microsoft Windows partition:

- drag the slider between the Windows (light blue) and Mandriva (dark blue) partitions

( ) Erase and use entire disk

(*) Custom disk partitioning: (I give about 50 % disk space to each OS, but about 50 GB for Linux should be maximum as I have less applications installed to Linux)

- select Windows (blue) partition and decrease the size leaving at least about 10 GB for Windows and at least about 10 GB for Mandriva (depends, how much space you need for software for each OS)

- select Empty (white) partition, look at free space, select Create, select Filesystem type: "Journalised FS: ext4", Mount point: "/" and increase the size making sure you have 0.5 GB - 1 GB room for swap

- select Empty again (smaller this time), select Create, select "Linux swap" and make the size approximately 0.5 GB - 1 GB

- now you should have Windows (blue, sda1), Ext3/Ext4 (red, sda5), Swap (green, sda6) and a little bit of free space left, press Done

Unused packages removal:

[x] Unused hardware support (for example ISDN modem)

Bootloader:

Bootloader to use: [GRUB with graphical menu]

Boot device: [/dev/sda (ATA WDC WD600VE...)]

Main options: (Note to myself: don't touch Advanced settings below with FS laptop or the menus and windows disappear.)

Delay before booting default image: [10]

[x] Enable ACPI

Boot menu:

windows (/dev/sda1) (you can choose Windows as the default OS on startup)

linux (/boot/vmlinuz)

linux-nonfb (/boot/vmlinuz)

failsafe (/boot/vmlinuz)

Note: after installation in text-only view press Ctrl+j to shutdown system.

Note: If you installed Linux by resizing Windows partition: use chkdsk (should happen automatically when starting Windows) before doing anything else.

Almost OK: Mandriva Linux One 2010 (GNOME 2): FS laptop (USB ports don't work except for a mouse a bit).

Problems: after installing Mandriva Linux One 2010 (GNOME 2) with Wings Desktop when I try to start the new system I can't login.

Problems: Mandriva Linux One 2010.2 (GNOME 2) installation disc is not working correctly with FS laptop: I see login screen which usually is not a good sign.
