Introduction
Here are some of my game and game platform settings. See also: Applications, Software.
Steam 2/2017 (OS X 10.11, Windows 10)
Account
[ ] Don't save account credentials on this computer
Friends
[x] Automatically sign into Friends when I start Steam
[x] Display timestamps in chat log
[x] Always open a new chat window rather than a tab
Notifications & Sound
When any Friend joins a game
[x] Display a notification
[x] Play a sound
When any friend comes online
[ ] Display a notification (depends, can be annoying when not expecting anyone)

In-Game
[ ] Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game (Steam Overlay can cause problems, for example with games made with Unity)
[x] Use the Big Picture Overlay when using a Steam Controller from the desktop
[x] Use Desktop Game Theatre when launching desktop games while SteamVR is astive

Comment: you need to have Steam Overlay enabled, at least in OS X 10.11.
