Email and Usenet Client Settings
Introduction
Here are some of my email and Usenet client settings. Comment: when Usenet newsgroups where much more popular than nowadays (2010s), email clients also had Usenet news functionality, and some still do. Mozilla Thunderbird 5: Gmail
Note: enable POP in Gmail.
Note: the first time you define an email account, use the manual settings, do not create an email account using the simple way.
Creation:
"Tools", "Account Settings...", "Account Actions" button, "Add Mail Account...".
Input name, address and password. Press "Manual config" button.
1. Incoming mail (POP3):
- Server name: pop.googlemail.com
- Port: 995
- Connection security: SSL/TLS
2. Outgoing mail (SMTP):
- Server name: smtp.googlemail.com
- Port: 465
- Connection security: SSL/TLS
Outlook Express 6: Gmail
Note: enable POP in Gmail.
1. Incoming mail (POP3):
- pop.gmail.com
- server port number: 995
- [x] This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
- (comment: port 995/tcp: pop3s, pop3 protocol over TLS/SSL)
2. Outgoing mail (SMTP):
- smtp.gmail.com
- server port number: 465
- [x] This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
- (comment: port 465/tcp: urd, URL Rendesvous Directory for SSM)
- [x] My server requires authentication
Outlook Express 6: Newsgroups
1. When quoting text from a website with foreign characters and the emphasis is on having the characters shown correctly:
1.1 Note to myself: remember not to make over 70 character long lines or the lines get too long!
1.2 "Tools", "Options...", "Send" tab, "News Sending Format" section, "Plain Text Settings" button:
- (*) MIME
- Encode text using: Quoted Printable
- [ ] Allow 8-bit characters in headers
- Automatically wrap text at [74] characters, when sending.
- [x] Indent the original text with > when replying or forwarding.
1.3 "New Post" button. "Format", "Encoding", "Unicode (UTF-8)"
2. When posting a regular message and the emphasis is on being able to reply to my messages easily without needing to manually add quotation (e.g. >) characters in front of every original line:

- (*) Uuencode
- Automatically wrap text at [74] characters, when sending.
- [x] Indent the original text with > when replying or forwarding.
Windows Live Mail 2011: Newsgroups
Note: install from explore.live.com "Windows Live Essentials" (July 2011).
"Accounts" tab, "Properties" button:
- News Account: News.Individual.NET
- Name: [me]
- E-mail address: [me]
- Note to myself: check the email address. Hotmail address might be suggested, but I use my Gmail address to collect spam from newsgroups.
- Server name: News.Individual.NET
- [x] This server requires me to log on
- News (NNTP): 119
