Biology
They live in damp areas and have two predominant factions; freshwater and saltwater. The saltwater squidpeople live in saltwater marshes and bogs while the freshwater ones live in swamps and other freshwater marsh areas. They regulate their body temperatures through their skin and get sick if they are allowed to get too dry. Mirmurk contain very little skeletal structure, with the majority of it residing in their head, neck, and torso. It is a cartilage based system that allows them to fit through far smaller spaces than would be expected, while maintaining a clear and recognizable form.
They are capable of breathing both underwater and out of the water along with traveling through both terrains. Most mirmurk start out as aquatic creatures and work their way up to spending some of their time on land. Their tentacles need to be exercised and stretched to obtain a steady form of locomotion when on dry land, as they are not used to supporting their full body weight.
Reproduction
The sexual organs of mirmurk are kept hidden under their tentacles as a safety measure. Females are fertile at all times of the year and gestation last for seven months. During this time, the mother's spots glow at all times as her body processes the large amount of magic contained within her. They birth one to two live young and have a recuperation year where their bodies repair from the developing and birthing process.
Diet
They eat meat, fish, and insects for the most part, using roots and leaves in medicine and healing. Most of the food they eat in their natural habitats is raw, and cooking is viewed as an impractical skill, since, hey, food is fine to eat as is.
Magic and Abilities
The mirmurk are able to fit into small locations and are natural contortionists. They are very nimble when they're in the water, but, that dexterity tanks as soon as they're stuck on dry land.
Magic
Mirmurks are naturals at elemental magic. Each mirmurk is born with a certain proficiency, though, it is possible for a mirmurk to learn other elements if they take the time and energy to practice them. There are four core elemental groups mirmurk are known to use.
Fire, heat, explosions
Ice, cold, water
Lightning, energy
Ground, fertility
Culture
Mirmurk are independent, but curious creatures that tend to enjoy learning about the way other cultures go about things.
It's common for families to stay in touch with each other, even after the children have grown up and found their own places to live.
Miscellaneous
Their teeth are notably sharp and are popular collectibles in some parts of the world.
