Raz is that demon in Sid’s head. ok not really.
Razputin is a Dream Demon, And also the ancient being known simply as the Nightmare.
“. . . a defunct nightmare, which had perished in the midst of its wickedness, and left its flabby corpse on the breast of the tormented one, to be gotten rid of as it might.”
The dormancy was ended abruptly when a demon’s experiment blasted a hole under where the nightmare was and launched it straight into the mortal realm. The demon promptly scooped up the very unstable and disoriented nightmare and presented it to the Demon King Oz, who decided to give the creature a form capable of existing outside the dream realm, by turning it into a demon. thus The Dream Demon came into being. As only a little bit of the nightmare was actually conscious when this occurred, the rest of it was put in a permeant dormant state. The new demon was given the the name Razputin and was put under the care of the one who had punted it into this world to start with while it adjusted to its new state of being. As a result Raz spent his first years as a demon in hell.
at some point it was decided he needed to see more than just hell, and he was passed onto a sevoda named Bernice, the retainer of the queen. Raz became close friends with Bernice, and Stayed primarily with her up until a little after the Quartzpike incident, where he was called back to hell before the entire thing was abruptly sealed. With no way to get back to the crystal city, he did his best to avoid the Demon hunters, but was eventually cornered in a basement under a town called Crossroads.
Many years later, he has a chance connection synching up to the dream of Sid, who he promptly latches onto and becomes a pretty prominent fixture in the guy’s dreams. They bond, and when Sid ends up in Trifold, which happens to be the same place Raz got sealed to start with, Raz uses that connection to talk to him, and eventually lead Sid to the spot where he was sealed thusly freeing the demon. He’s left with no memories, and has to muddle through things.
Raz is the primary reason Sid got involved in Crow’s orb quest to start with, considering his history with the crystal city, and the whole saving crow’s life when he was dying of chaos thing. during one of these outings, he gets labeled as a ‘nightmare’ by a local hedgewitch, and it leads to some very unsettling discoveries and a very deep rooted fear of the Dream God of which Sid’s boyfriend Gru is convinced he just needs to be told that Raz definitely isn’t the nightmare. Despite Raz’s insistence he shouldn’t, Gru meets with the Dream God by working with a Shadowkin named Chris. The God instantly recognizes the nightmare’s energy on Gru and is pretty much ready to track down and destroy Raz then and there. Gru manages to get the God to give them three months to prove that Raz isn’t the same creature that caused all those problems long ago, and that he’s changed. So now they end up with that new set of problems, since Raz is being judged for a crime he no longer remembers committing.
By this point, Raz also has made friends with Gizem, A kid who’s straight up from another time, and is hiding out here. they had a rather interesting encounter with her accidentally knocking herself out while trying to hide in a chest, and him carrying her back to crow’s shop to make sure she was ok. They grow very close during this time and upon learning that Raz has pretty much three months to live, she starts working on a way to help him somehow survive the inevitable encounter with the Dream God. Chris, Feeling guilty for his role in getting Raz pretty much set up on his god’s chopping block, also decides to help and together they come up with a plan of pulling Raz’s missing memories back out, so he can remember why the Dream God hates him in the first place.
They use Gizem’s dream as a safe secluded place, have Chris put up defenses, and Gizem uses her powers over time to pull out Raz’s memories.
Inevitably she ends up peeling off the altercations Oz had made to Raz, and returning the Nightmare to its full state, pulling the rest out of it out of its dormancy.
Raz is promptly drowned out in the mass of amalgamated beings, and the nightmare is left as a huddled hulking mass of limbs and eyes and multiple voices. Gizem manages to knock it prone, and calm the mass down, thus the Nightmare starts coming to terms with itself and gaining more semblance of conformity. It’s a slow arduous process but ends up being enough to keep the creature together when the Dream God finally does show up, as he proceeds to just rip the part of him that had been damaged and taken by the nightmare when it ran at the end of their first encounter rather than outright kill it.
The god then wakes Gizem up and leaves the nightmare plastered against her mind, allowing it to imprint itself there, and easily be extracted by Oz, who then brought Raz back out of the mass and turned him into a demon once more.
Abilities and Powers
Being the Nightmare, Raz has ultimate control over dreams that he’s in. from weaving dreams to altering them to pushing the dreamer into lucid sleep. He can easily flit between dreams and string them together, ect. you think it up he can probably do it. He’s at his most powerful in the dream realm.
He’s a fluid shapeshifter, often changing his form drastically to suit his mood or the situation. his base form appears to be almost liquid in state, though due to his current almagamated state his body might start making more involuntary motion.
Another side effect of his nightmare state is Raz talks in a layered voice. Raz's being the dominant voice heard, but the other parts of the nightmare can also be heard saying the same thing. This does not effect his human disguised voice, just the telepathic one.
Being turned into a demon, he primarily functions as the ‘key’ to Hell, a failsafe should it ever be sealed over. This has no Effect on the actual Dream based powers of his real form, Hence why he's known as a Dream Demon Rather than just a Key demon. Unlike actual demons, Raz can, and often does have multiple eyes open on his natural form at most times.
After awakening the dormant nightmare state and becoming a demon again, His power has grown immensely. He still has problems manifesting and uses Sid’s mind as an anchor to keep himself grounded in the real world. The Dream God has grafted him a connection with Gizem’s mind as well. This whole thing leads to some interesting effects on Sid and Gizem, mainly in the form a shielding from other beings that try and mess with his head. While Raz is present, No mental powers will be effective on them.
As a Demon, he’s naturally able to filter chaotic energy and can focus this skill to ‘purify’ corrupted creatures, or those falling to corruption.
Relationships
Sid
Sid, possessing a shard of Raz's crystal prison is the first person Raz has come in contact with since his sealing. As such he's very attached to the man in a few ways, having latched onto his mindscape. He's both very fond of Sid and very grateful that sid was there so he could haul himself out of his horrible prison for even a few hours. Since his release he's continued to stick around Sid the most. They've continued to grow closer and there's a pretty solid bond between the two of them now. Raz both looks up to Sid and Looks out for Sid, so it ends up being a wierd Dynamic, but they both care for eachother very much.
Gru
Where there is Sid there is Gru, usually. Gru's misguided attempt to get Raz some closure with the Dream God caused a lot of trouble, but it turned out ok. Raz isn't quite as close to Gru as he is with Sid, but still cares for the Fishman very much, and would like to spend more time with him in the future.
Crow
He thought something was off with crow when they met. turns out the guy was corrupted. Raz purified him of that and learned a lot of his secrets outright as a result. He appreciates Crow helping him relearn his name and wants to help the guy with his quest thing, dragging all the humans along for the ride.
Sully
Raz knows Sully isn't as rough as he tries to make himself, and they've bonded a lot better over the course of the whole rock quest thing. Raz is always a bit surprised by Sully, but that's a good thing! Sully is a good friend.
Chris
Raz didn't really get to know Chris up until he kind of offered up to help with the whole Nightmare problem, and he's known him more as the Nightmare than as Raz as a result, leading all of the nightmare to be fairly fond of Chris in general.
Gizem
This small girl he saved from a chest in the crystal city, and developed a surprisingly fast friendship bond with. She helped pull the Nightmare back out of Raz, and then helped the Nightmare itself gain it's footing again. as a whole, Raz and the Nightmare both have a strong bond with Gizem, and this is only amplified by the Dream God grafting the nightmare onto her. If Raz isn't with Sid for whatever reason, he's absolutely likely to be with her.
Braelii
Raz really likes her. her horns are cool and she's tough and stuff like Sid! really neat. he likes her fluffy hair too it's fun to play with.
Bernice
His sevoda friend from long ago, he's recently found out she perished and hasn't been taking it well, but has chosen to focus on other things rather than actually deal with it.
T'Keer
The guardian of the forest of shadows, and Downright terrifying to the Nightmare, but overall has a decent?? Relationship with the guy. Feels bad, but has no way of making things better for him.
Dream King
They have a long arduous History, and the Nightmare is terrified of this guy. Now that The king has gotten back the peice fo him that The Nightmare took, Raz hopes to never see him ever again.
Oz
The King, who altered the Nightmare's form enough to give it a foothold in the mortal realm as a demon. Twice now! Raz owes him a lot and hopes to be able to function as a decent Key when called for.
Deven
The one who blasted Raz out of the dream realm to start with and the reason Raz is a Demon at all. He pretty much helped raise Raz to an extent, and Raz has fond memories of him.
History
Raz started out life as a strange forgotten figment of the dream realm. It was alone, and fueled by an intense desperate desire to not be alone anymore, this thing amassed enough power to start ensnaring people in never-ending dreams in what would be known as the Deep Dream Island Epidemic. Taking in the souls that perished in the event, the little figment compounded it’s power and became a thing called the Nightmare.
It’s Reign over the dream realm was short lived, as one of the mortal creatures that it had captured went forth and despite all odds, defeated the nightmare. But the nightmare refused to accept this, and in the moment before the final blow was struck, it lashed out with a cheap shot which damaged the dreamer’s being, then Fled. This permanently tethered the Dreamer to the Dream Realm, and thusly created the Dream King.
The Nightmare slunk off to some forgotten corner of the realm where it could recover, and promptly sunk into a dormant state where it remained for a long time.
Personality
Being a creature actually made up of a multitude of beings all smashed together in an amalgamated mass, Raz as a whole is a little bit scattered, as one might expect. He struggles a bit with keeping himself oriented and while Raz himself is the primary one in control, he’s still influenced by the rest of them. He's gleamed may
be a bit too much from Sid, which has led him to be a bit more crass in nature than he might have been otherwise, but despite this he has a more child-like outlook on things, and though he's objectively pretty damn old, mentally he's much younger.
