Eriness is a small, rural town the specializes in farming. It has a small, but content population and does not interact too much with the world at large.
History
Early History
Eriness started out as a small human settlement of farmers and traders who sought new land to spread into. Prior to human intervention, the valley that would eventually become Eriness housed a small number of abandoned caves where ancient mnemodi made their homes. By the time the first human settlers arrived, the valley was used only for occasional hunting and gathering expeditions by the People in the surrounding woods and fields.
The first humans moved in by way of the river, stopping in the valley to rest for a few days before carrying on. When an unseasonably early snowstorm caught the humans off guard, they decided to make Eriness into a more permanent settlement. They hunkered down for the winter and were able to last through to spring without much trouble. True to their original intentions, most of the humans continued on down stream. A select group of settlers decided they liked the valley and decided to make a trading outpost for those who were heading farther away from their homeland. A settlement was established and, over time, a number of farmers moved in to take advantage of the decently fertile soil and sunny fields.
Contemporary History
Because of its isolated and rural location, not much has changed in Eriness since it was established as a town. It is still a quiet, content town of humans who live in relative peace and ease.
Geography
Topography
The surrounding land is hilly and modestly fertile. The town was built next to a tributary for a major river and is well irrigated as a result. It borders a small wooded area. There are a few waterfalls and gorges within walking distance of the town.
Climate
Eriness has a temperate climate and experiences average lengths with seasons.
Architecture
Most buildings are one to two stories and include a basement. The general architectural motif of the area is somewhere between carpenter gothic and Dutch colonial revival. There is only one carpenter in town, so new houses and substantial repairs and modifications need to be planned out ahead of time with him. Houses tend to have large fireplaces and are built with sconces for candles.
Districts
There's a main street with a number of shops. Apart from that, it's mostly residential and agricultural. The shops are more for the citizens than for visitors, but, there is still a small inn that operates for any visitors.
Demographics
Eriness is a human town with little to no monsters living in or around the village limits. Most of the humans are roner and, while it is not unheard of for a stranger looking human to stop by, they are a bit of a spectacle to the inhabitants. Most villagers are in the middle class, and there is no extreme difference as far as gender divisions go. While some of the youth move out into larger cities or towns as they grow up, there is still a nice percentage that remain in the town and settle down.
Economy
Eriness' economy is based around trading and agriculture. Their location on the river makes them a good spot for river trade. There are a number of vineyards in the area that produce fine wine products that are shipped out to other areas of the continent by way of the river. Most of their monetary intake is thanks to this industry. Other small business owners have shops set up in the town itself and subsist on local business and the occasional travelers who stay in town.
Government
The town's decisions are made by a small comity of voluntary townsfolk. The town is on good terms with the other towns and cities of the continent, but interacts with them mostly through trade. All decisions are run through the sheriff, who deals with issues of crime and safety concerns and acts as de facto head of the town government when the need arises.
