A shopkeeper with a few secrets he's keeping from the general public. Not that anyone's looked too hard into those. It's a bit of a challenge to get past that mess of a shop he keeps.
Background
Early Life
Crow, born Emily, is the only child hatched to a family of two very well loved and famous birds who worked hard to keep the forest safe. While their intentions were good, Crow's parents often overlooked him, leading to a feeling of disconnect and confusion between himself and his parents. They left him to fend for himself for the most part, and he never felt comfortable with the closeness most children experienced. He learned to understand the world around him through experiments and observed truths.
His parents would stop by when they weren't busy, but, talked at Crow as opposed to listened to him. He felt their pressure and a sense of distaste for them, but it was dampened by the knowledge that they would not stay for long and he would not need to listen to them lecture him on what his duties were or how, if he wasn't going to train himself in a respectable field, he should at least work hard at picking a respectable man to mate with. Rather than accomplish this, Crow befriended a parasitic shapeshifter who also lived in the forest. When his parents realized he was not making any progress in his search for a mate, they sent him off to live with his aunt and uncle, who ran a butcher shop in Etal.
Schooling
While in Etal, Crow's aunt and uncle saw to it he went to the local human school and received an education. He had a hard time fitting in, even with his runic disguise, and felt out of place in the uniform he was given to wear. He enjoyed the learning portions of school and learned as much as he could from the teachers, who had a bit more pity for him than some of his peers. He was prone to teasing and bullying during this period of time and did his best to stay either in the classroom, or at the butcher shop, working. He kept in contact with Atherson for a few years before dropping contact with his friend.
He has a few addiction problems and hoards items that appeal to him. These traits are likely because of his childhood as well as his species' natural hoarding habits. He has always leaned towards hard work with little to no breaks, but, after his forest was destroyed, he became reliant on coffee and occupying himself with work. Because he does not understand emotions, including his own, he does not see the need to talk about his past experiences with friends or anyone concerned or curious about him.
Crow cares about the people and things he knows. It's hard to get him to see things outside of his bubble of interests unless you find a way to hook him in. He's hyper focused on what he knows and what his goals are to the point where he can appear selfish, single-minded, and cold. Despite his nature, he has an interest in improving and understanding people better. He is aware of his empathy gap and, as long as he is on good enough terms with them, he is willing to make attempts to understand these people as long as they don't do anything to upset him.
Personality
Crow has a hard time understanding emotions and interpersonal connections. It's not because he hasn't tried. He's given it a good scientific go, but, for some reason, relationship studies just don't give him enough information to work on. He's one of the last known corave alive and uses runes and magic to disguise himself from others. He's got an addiction to coffee that his friends are trying to work him off of, but, he is stubborn and does not understand why it's so bad that he relies on coffee to function.
Fighting Abilities
Crow usually never tries when it comes to fighting. He's most likely to ignore the danger and either carry on his way or remain in a safe location. His standard refusal to face unnecessary danger has both kept him alive and gotten him a few items stolen. His tendency to walk past danger has, on average, confused his attackers and gotten him beaten up and robbed a few times. These days, he leans towards not doing anything and staying in place. He does not enjoy pain that much. It is unpleasant.
Relationships
Atherson
A childhood friend of Crow's who grew up in the same forest as him. They first met when Atherson found Crow alone in a tree and tried to convince him to come down, which led into a series of discussions about life and what they liked.. They maintained this kind of long distance relationship until Atherson decided he liked the bird and gave him protection and safety. They've had ups and downs, but stuck together none the less. Their bond has only gotten stronger since the death of their home, though Crow often confuses and exasperates Atherson. In turn, Crow is always a bit suspicious of his friend and what his motives are, even though he does not fear the man.
Atherson gave Crow a place to stay right after the forest was destroyed and before Crow could get the courage to return to his shop.
Crow has a bad habit of showing up at Atherson's shop and wasting his time over trivial matters, such as where he's moved his coffee maker this time, which Atherson would prefer not to deal with.
Astar
One of the people Crow looks up to. He's taken it upon himself to improve some inventions of Astar's.
Braelii
He likes how she listened to what he said. That was nice.
He appreciates that she is willing to go on missions without questioning why. It is nice to not have to convince her to go and deal with things like bees; she's just ready to go when he beings it up.
Chicory
She is very good with healing. Crow appreciates that. She is practical and wants to help fix things. He has not spent too much personal time with her, but, her overwhelming competence coupled with her sibling bond with Sully are enough to give Crow a certain fondness for her. Sure, she doesn't understand the way he does things, but, Crow hasn't met many people who actually understand him.
Emii
She is small and adorable and he doesn't know what to make of her. He's supposed to be. Nurturing? Maybe. He is supposed to feed her? Yes. He can handle that. He likes to get her toys, because he knows what it is like to want something very much. It's part of his usual lifestyle. The only problem is, he doesn't really understand what is appropriate to give a small, fragile human child.
He is perplexed by his tendency to wake up with her in his feathers when he is in his true form. He's not sure how she finds out he's sleeping every time. It's one of the major mysteries of the world.
Gru
Crow knew Gru would overstep things with someone, but this is literally the nightmare scenario. He hopes this mission will give Gru time to calm down and think clearly.
He was worried Gru would make fun of him after he heard his real name and met his family. Instead, Gru impressed him. It was nice. Perhaps Gru is not as bad as Crow always thought.
Irwin
Crow likes this human. He listens to Crow and has a nice laugh.
Crow is glad he is free from his family. They seemed bad. He had some plans for how to get Irwin away from them, but murder worked out alright as far as he can tell. He is happy to give him a place to stay until he decides he's found a better home. Maybe he needs to expand his shop in the future. He is running out of space. It doesn't seem good to make Irwin sleep under the telescope.
He appreciates that Irwin can deal with what he looks like despite being a human raised in Navroya. That is nice.
Raz
He likes the demon. He knows what it is like to lose a place that is important. He does not understand it as much as Raz seems to, but he feels a connection.
He tries to find ways to include Raz. The demon seems upset more often than before.
Sid
He used to remind him of the people in the human schools who made fun of him while he lived with his aunt and uncle. That feeling died down as he spent more time with the human. The demon says he is ok, and Crow trusts the demon.
He is getting more used to Sid. He still does not always approve of what Sid does, but he has gotten a better understanding of him. He still does not know why Sid likes wasting people, but he has come to terms with this fact. Sid is just weird. There is nothing to be done about this.
Sully
A treasure lizard Crow miraculously managed to befriend by breaking an enchanted slave collar for the poor guy. Despite Sully's more practical nature and rough exterior, the two have bonded and formed a peculiar, trusting friendship. Crow has the utmost faith in Sully and trusts him with intimate knowledge about both himself and his shop's powers. He still hasn't reached a level where he feels like he can tell Sully everything, but, he trusts Sully a whole lot. Especially with his newer secrets.
He is not above saddling Sully with Emii by promising the child juice. That is probably one of the largest pitfalls of their relationship. He can't help it. Sometimes he just wants that space and he knows that Sully can't say no to her.
Te'Keer
Te'Keer is not too happy with the number of times Crow has shown up looking for coffee at his bar. While he is sympathetic to Crow's status as a displaced monster, he can see an addiction when presented with one. Also, it's hard to deal with him being behind the counter all the time trying to touch things while working the coffee press. Unacceptable.
Stories
While Crow has a lot of natural skills with runes, including his magic giving him a competitive edge, he spent a lot of time training to memorize the necessary runes and charms needed for his line of business. As such, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of other enchantments and is very quick at recognizing when there is something off about a house, location, or person.
Crow's natural magic ties in with his rune training. His ability to learn and create new ways to twist the common runes and spells into more complicated and useful ones. Most of that comes from his sharp mind, but, his natural magic gives him an extra edge when it comes to boosting the power of his products. He is also able to put simple magic and spells onto objects without a long wait time or special conditions like most creatures would. Since he supplies the magic, he does not need to draw it out of a natural source unless he is learning something new or trying something that is very powerful.
