“Listen, I’m telling you, this guy is a big deal. We have to find a way to get to him.”
Vesper crossed his hands over his chest as he spoke. He had to make a point of how important this was. He got the distinct impression Zelda didn’t take him seriously when he went on about this guy, and that was unacceptable.
His friend looked to the side, shuffling her talons on the ground.
“I just don’t know why you want to meet him. It seems like an awful long trip to take to track somebody down. It could get dangerous, too. I don’t want any trouble.”
He sniffed and looked over his shoulder at Zelda.
“There won’t be any trouble.”
She shrugged at him in her weird, birdy way. He could almost see the hesitance pour off of her as she picked her next words with the utmost care.
“It’s supposed to be very far away.”
Vesper shut his eyes and tapped his foot on the ground. That was a reasonable concern. Still, he wished she wouldn’t try to use distance as an obstacle. They weren’t cowards. They could go however far it took to find what they wanted. They were all strong, ever last one of them. It wasn’t hard to imagine them getting across the world to find this amazing person. At the very least, he didn’t want to give up without giving it a shot.
“We’re not bad at long distance travel, Zelda.” He paused as a new idea hit him. Maybe this wasn’t about her worrying over the actual details of finding him. Maybe this was about something else entirely. “Is there something else you’re worried about?”
She scrunched her face up and looked towards the ground.
“I just, I heard he’s not the nicest person. He’s supposed to be pretty scary. I heard some people say he used to be in a gang, and that he’s killed people before.”
Vesper walked over and put an arm around her shoulder. He should have pieced this together sooner. Zelda wouldn’t bring something like that up unless she had bigger worries on her mind. He gave his friend a small hug.
“It’s ok, Zel, we’re in a gang, too. We’ll show him what we’re made of if he tries anything funny, I promise.”
