Sidney Vance, who goes by Sid (never Sidney), is a rone man who has a lot of trouble identifying very basic things about himself, like what he does, or the status of his relationships, or how gay he is on a scale from 1 to 10. His involvement in ROCK QUEST™ is mostly due to the voice in his head, because if he had it his way he wouldn't involve himself or Gru in something so dangerous -- but Sid will always back up his homies, and that includes becoming involved in a quest to find magic artifacts and free an ancient monster queen.
Background
Sid travels with Gruoni Tidemann, performing odd jobs wherever he can to keep their finances afloat, and making sure Gru doesn't get into trouble he can't get out of. To a not-so-observant person, the many scars he has (on his face, hands, and arms most noticeably), the large amount of tattoos he has (all down his arms, across his chest, on his back, and one on his butt), and his resting bitch face make him look like someone who's more at home smashing chairs on someone's back in a dive bar than traveling the world with a cheery musician.
Personality
Sid is reticent and curt with most people, and it's very easy to get him to growl at you, especially if you accidentally ask him about a few choice topics. He grew up on Acetate and carried a lot of the prejudices associated with that land, but they were dampened considerably in his late teens and demolished almost completely after he left Navroya. He still thinks monsters look and act weird, though.
Sid, unlike Gru, is skeptical and slow to trust, preferring to treat most people with neutral suspicion. If he considers you a friend, though, he will take a bullet for you. He's also got a soft spot for small animals as well as children and will often go out of his way to help them if they're in trouble. This extends to adults, but not to the same extent.
Early Life
Sid was born in a small town in Tremenia, his parents' only child. Though poor and small, Sid's family was happy and tight-knit. However, tragedy struck when he was 10 years old, and his mother Judith fell ill. Upon discovering that she had a brain tumor, Sid's father Cecil took his family to Navroya to try to get help from the world's most advanced doctors, but to no avail. After a lengthy, painful, expensive and unsuccessful treatment, Judith died, leaving Sid's father with an enormous amount of debt, the responsibility of raising his son alone, and a gaping hole where his heart used to be. Ultimately, the stress proved to be too much for Cecil, and he turned to drinking. Though able to continue providing for Sid for a time after Judith's death, as time went on and his drinking problem worsened Cecil became more and more abusive and began to beat Sid. After a few years of this treatment, Sid dropped out of school and ran away from home at the age of 15, joining one of Navroya's street gangs to survive.
Gang and After
Sid's time as a gang member lasted for around two years before he was yanked off the streets by the legitimate half of Yantzey Feiring's charity efforts. Rehabilitating was difficult, especially with his former comrades trying to press him into rejoining, but Sid managed with Yantzey's support to land an apprenticeship in a mechanic's shop. Life turned to something resembling normal for the following few years as Sid learned more about how vehicles, robots, and other technology worked, and made great strides patching up his shoddy education (though he's still sorely lacking in areas that aren't required for building, repairing, and analyzing the things he worked with; for example, literature and writing).
Gruoni, Leaving Navroya, and Later
When Sid was 23, he rescued Gru from his situation as a slave, but was forced to escape the city because that act incurred the wrath of a large criminal organization. Grateful for what he'd done, Gru offered to give Sid a place to stay if he came with him, and Sid agreed. The two traveled to Lith, and Sid, now infatuated with Gru, stuck with him for the next couple years, first staying at Gru's hometown, and then roaming the open roads with him.
After a voice in his head made its appearance, he and Gru went to Trifold, where they found gainful employment, a demon, and a quest to save the world. Or something like that. Sid continued to be a dummy and ended up getting cursed after shouting abuse at the god of healing, then confessed his feelings to Gru and got the curse lifted the same day. Things are a little crazy for him now since a lot of things in his life are changing, especially with Raz's impending doom by dream god.
Abilities and Powers
Sid is an experienced mechanic and fish babysitter, and can fix a lot of the broken crap you have lying around if you ask him to. He also has the power of starting arguments like an asshole even though he knows he shouldn't and almost always regrets it afterwards.
Sid has above-average strength and quick reflexes for a Roner. While he picked up some brawling techniques fighting on streets covered in broken glass and oil stains, most of Sid's ability to hold his own in a fistfight comes from years of boxing, which he took up as as a hobby and physical activity at Yantzey's encouragement (Yantzey was not surprised that Sid chose boxing over football or squash). Sid is well versed in the use of several thuggish implements, like brass knuckles, clubs, and knives, and can use a gun a little more skillfully than the average undercity gang member.
Relationships
Gruoni Tidemann
The boyfriend. Sid rescued him from a bad situation in Navroya and then stuck with him until he finally fessed up about his feelings. It's safe to say that Sid cares more about this merman than any other person alive.
Raz
At first, Sid treated this kid like a peer, but now that he's made friends with more people and remembered more about himself, Sid is feeling a lot more protective and maybe even just a tiny little bit parental towards his demon child. Sid feels that since he freed Raz, he's at least partly responsible for what happens to him. And he is totally fine with Raz stealing one of his jackets.
Gizem
Raz's little friend. Sid felt a little bit jealous at first, but he got over that pretty quick. He's glad that Raz is making friends, and to boot, Giz wants to help out with finding the sanctuary stones. As far as he's concerned, she's in the circle of people he would do something stupid to protect.
Sully
This lizard is an asshole, but he did help free Raz, and he did save him, Gru, and Khole from the chads. That means Sid owes him. The little adventure they had finding a stone in a small mountain town in Acetate helped build more trust with Sully too, because you don't get into a fight with an angry nagisa and come out of it feeling the same way about the guy who was fighting alongside you.
Crow
They had a rocky start, but Sid's decided that just because Crow is weird and has lots of strange customs doesn't mean he's a bad person. Right now, Sid is neutral about Crow.
Emmeline
Can a biker from Navroya become friends with a small-town baker married to a bear? Yes. Yes he can. He's looking forward to seeing her again.
Tharin
Sid had never known whether a bear could bake before he met Tharin, but then again he'd never thought about it. He's hoping whatever's underneath the face bandages isn't too horrifying, but he knows firsthand that shotgun wounds usually aren't very pretty. He was definitely a little weirded out when he found out that Tharin was the father of Emmeline's child, but not too badly. It's not worth getting worked up over who has kids with who.
Alazne
Really touchy and Raz doesn't like her too much. Sid isn't really interested in getting to know her, but she is re-energizing the orb, so she's alright.
Zach
Scars look really similar. That's a little weird. The guy needs to know when to lay down and let himself recover, but he's also shown himself to be downright fearless, and that's got Sid's respect.
Irwin
Well, the guy murdered his own family in the messiest way possible that doesn't involve a wood chipper, and helping to clean up the mess was probably not the best way to get introduced. Once Sid calmed down and got filled in on some of the context, he chilled out. But he still doesn't really trust the guy.
Yantzey
Sid owes this guy a lot. Without Mr. F, Sid would probably still be part of a gang or dead by now. They don't see each other often these days, but Sid is one of Yantzey's many unofficially adopted kids, and used to help him out in Navroya by acting as protection or letting people Yantzey sent to use his apartment as a safe house.
Saral
Probably the most unexpected friend Sid's ever made. Sid actually cares about how this squid is doing, probably because he felt like they had a lot in common. Someday Sid wants to go visit the forest again just to see him, but for now sending him cooking equipment will have to do.
Rika
Rickshaw lady that reminded him of the taxi drivers back home, which made a lot of sense once he learned she actually lived in Navroya before. He likes her and is probably gonna see if he can meet up for drinks and talk with someone who knows what a motorcycle is, which is a rare commodity in Trinity and on Lith.
