Cúchulainn Gaels 4-11 Castledermot 5-15.
In an entertaining game played under lights at Ellistown, the newly amalgamated Cúchulainn Gaels (Athgarvan, Ellistown & Kildangan) and Castledermot got their league campaigns off to a lively start. Castledermot raced into a 1-6 to 0-0 lead with Aaron Murphy and David Kelly tormenting the gaels defence incessantly. But the Gaels began to find their feet and steadily clawed their way back, so much so that with just 2 minutes to the break the score stood at 1-6 to 1-4. Conor Hyland, Jack Behan and Conor O’Loughlin excelling for the Gaels. However just on the stroke of half time, an error in the amalgamated teams defence allowed Castledermot in for a fortuitous goal from Dean Lawless from a long way out.
The second half began as did the first with Castledermot on top in the third quarter, scoring at will, and displaying some excellent point taking and correct decision making. Four Conor Hyland frees kept the Gaels in touch, but with twelve minutes left the contest seemed finished when Castledermot rattled in a fourth goal. But just as in the first half, the Gaels reponded with some excellent football of their own and scored three goals in the final twelve minutes from Conor Hyland, Conor O’Loughlin and sub Robert Hanley who also chipped in with a couple of nice points.
Just four points now seperated the sides however, as at the end of the first half, history was repeated as Castledermots’ Conor Doyle banged in a smashing goal to dash all Gaels hopes.
Best for Castledermot were; Conor Walsh, Aaron Murphy, Dean Lawless and David Kelly while Cúchulainn Gaels were best served by Conor Hyland, Stuart Duffy, Conor O’Loughlin and Alex MaGuire.
