Kildangan Seniors started our 2012 Championship Campaign with a two point win against Maynooth scoring 16 points to Maynooths 1:11.
Played in Hawkfield Wednesday evening 25th, the attendance was treated to a very entertaining game of football, with few fouls and some great scores.
Kildangan scored from the throw in, Pauric Casey winning the ball and passing to Stephen Quigley who had the simplest of tasks to slot the ball over the Maynooth crossbar. Stephen, who was causing all sorts of problems for the Maynooth backline, added a second point minutes later from an intercepted Maynooth ball. Robbie Murray added a third point when Quigley picked him out with an astute pass. Further Kildangan points from Brandon Foley, Sean Francis, Pauric Casey and Richard Morgan left Kildangan ahead 7 points to 2 midway through the first half. Pauric Casey got the best out of the Maynooth keeper when he parried a shot on goal at the expense of a 45.
Maynooth were hanging on by a thread as the midfield area was dominated by Kildangan, Maynooth finally got a break when a goal bound shot was blocked by the Kildangan full back Colin Christie, the rebound fell to the Maynooth Corner forward who blasted to the Kildangan net. The score, against the run of play was Maynooths first in 20 Minutes. Kildangan replied with a Robbie Murray point, a clever hand pass by Jack Hickey putting him clear of the Maynooth defence. Maynooth added a point to finish the half one ahead; 1:06 to Kildangans 8 points.
The first score of the second half equalised matters, Rory Jacob soloing forward and popping over the bar following a superb catch by Tom Moran in midfield. Two Stephen Quigley points put Kildangan further in the clear, one from a free.
Pauric Casey added a point prior to Maynooth opening their second half account with a point.It was nip and tuck from here to the finish, Kildangan were never more than two ahead. Maynooth at one stage had a four on one with Kildangan keeper Sean Pollard only to fumble the ball when it looked easier to score. The remaining Kildangan scores of the half were points by Stephen Quigley (3) and Liam McCormack (1)
In a game that could have gone either way, Stephen Quigley was a thorn in the side of the Maynooth defence, others to feature prominently for Kildangan were Brandon Foley and Robbie Murray in attack, midfielders Tom Moran and Pauric Casey and the full back line of John MIller and Colin Christie.
Next Championship outing is against Sarsfields, venue and date TBA.
