U/16s championship Round 2- Barrow Gaels 1-13 Ellistown 0-11.
Barrow Gaels U16s had a hard fought victory over a skilful Ellistown team Friday evening.
Ellistown started the game with great determination and raced into a 05 to 02 lead by the 15th min.with the Gaels struggling to find the form of last weeks great win.
Ellistown looked to drive home their advantage with the Gaels keeper making a great save to keep his team in touch and looked relieved to be only 3 behind at half-time on a score of Ellistown 0-08 Barrow Gaels 0-05.
The second half started like the first with Ellistown coming forward in droves and added to further points to leave it 10 points to 5, but as the game progressed the Gaels started to find their form and hit 4 points on the trot.
A further score from each team left it Ellistown 0-11 Barrow Gaels 0-10 with 10 minutes remaining, but the momentum was now with Barrow Gaels who were keeping Ellistown pinned in their own half, until, with 9 mins remaining the turning point came when the Gaels split the Ellistown defence wide open and Robert Lovett came storming through the middle to blast the ball into the corner of the net.
This goal seemed to lift the Gaels to another level and they quickly added 3 more points to put the game beyond a helpless Ellistown team. The Gaels could have been further ahead at the end as what seemed a legitimate penalty was ruled to have been outside the large rectangle by referee Chris O Grady.
Great credit must go to both teams on a very enjoyable championship game played in a very sporting manner. The Kildangan players in the Barrow Gaels amalgamation contributed greatly to the win, with Luke Barry and Michael John Prendergast steadfast in defence, along with half back Jordan Kay, Stephen Keogh who worked tirelessly in midfield and forwards Ryan Moran and Robert Hanley. Robert had a 100% record with free kicks, all taken off the ground.
Barrow Gaels U16s next game is next Friday at 7-30 in Kildangan against Nurney.
