Moorefield travelled to Kildangan on Wednesday evening for the penultimate game in the South Board Under 12 league. The Newbridge side looked confident as they took to the field having been victorious when the sides met last month.
Kildangan opened brightly with points from Stephen Keogh and Lauren Kelly. Aoibhean Scully and Daniel Cawley were holding out the Moorefield attack with great success but midway through the half, the visitors scored two goals in quick succession. With the home side reeling Moorefield popped over three points to leave them well in control of the game. The Kildangan players greeted the half time whistle like a boxer on the ropes as they paused to assess the damage done by their opponents in the previous few minutes.
Kildangan made a number of changes at the break and started out the second half with renewed enthusiasm. A goalmouth scramble was finished to the net by Daniel Gilbert and Stephen Keogh added another goal to bring Kildangan right back into it. Two Moorefield points followed before a long ball over the top from Lara Gilbert found Joey O’Sullivan who broke free and scored a fantastic goal to leave just a point between the teams.
Grace Dooley, Eoin O’Fearghail and Robert McGrath gave everything they had in an effort to win the game and Kildangan hit the woodwork no less than four times with the game in the balance! The visitors got forward for two more points before Lauren Kelly scored a wonderful solo goal to leave the sides level with just two minutes left to play. Moorefield dug deep and hit a fine point to take the lead once more with time almost up. Kildangan’s final throw of the dice came when Robert McGrath made a great run from defence and had a shot from out the field that dipped agonisingly wide of the post as both sets of supporters held their breaths. The final whistle signalled the end to a wonderful game of football and a single point defeat for Kildangan.
Well done to both teams on an excellent display of football.
The next under 12 game is away to Robertstown on Wednesday next at 7pm.
