Under 14 Féile Quarter Final - Barrow Gaels v St. Kevins, 23 March 2014
St. Kevins made the trip to Kildangan on Sunday morning last for a Féile quarter final against Barrow Gaels.
Kevins got off to a blistering start and were 3.2 to no score ahead inside the first ten minutes. The Gaels eventually got off the mark with a pointed free from Robert McGrath and Eddie Roycroft goaled soon after to bring the home side to life.
St. Kevins struck for another goal to restore their substantial lead, however Robert McGrath replied with a great goal following a weaving run through the visitors defence. Oran Phelan and Daniel Gilbert were instrumental in bringing the home side back into the game with selfless running and dogged determination. Another flurry of scores followed before the half time whistle sounded with St. Kevins leading on a score line of 4.4 to 3.3.
Barrow Gaels restarted with great determination and were soon level. However, the visitors then hit a purple patch and scored three goals in quick succession, just as they had done in the first half. But the home team weren’t done yet. Robert McGrath struck 1.2 in the space of a few minutes, the goal coming from a free on the 20m line that stuck in the top corner of the net.
Daniel Gilbert collected a defensive clearance from Eoin O’Fearghail and fired over a point and the margin was down to four. Both sides swapped scores in the remaining minutes, however Barrow Gaels just could not bridge the gap, eventually losing by five points.
Although they battled hard, the home team paid the price for their slow start but they went down fighting. The under 14 League will follow in the next few weeks and we hope to have a number of challenge games during the intervening period.
