Cúchulainn Gaels Under 14’s got our Féile competition off to a flying start with a 4.09 to 2.08 win away to Round Towers on Sunday morning. The Gaels got a perfect start and were 1.03 to no score ahead after ten minutes, the goal coming after a high ball into the square from midfielder Stephen Keogh deceived the Towers goalkeeper and dropped into the net.
Towers suddenly clicked into gear and scored some fine points and could have taken the lead, but for a fine save by Daniel Cawley in the Gaels goal. They did eventually find the net and scored some fine points to bring the game level. The Gaels, with Jordan Kaye and Callum Sourke defending brilliantly, soon found their rhythm again. Robert McGrath restored the Gaels lead when he pointed after his goal attempt had been blocked and Cormac O’Mahony stretched it further with a pointed free. Towers had the final say with a late point to leave it 1.05 to 1.04 in favour of Cúchulainn Gaels at half time.
A Fergal O’Mahoney goal early in the second half followed by two more points put the Gaels in a commanding lead, the home side replied with a goal when a high ball into the square ended up in the net. Good work by Ryan Moran and JB Murphy created goal chances for Josh Clinton and Stephen Keogh which were duly converted.
As the clock ticked down Robert Hanley, Luke Barry, Michael John Prendergast and Jamie Kearns kept the Gaels in control and ensured a well deserved win.
Leixlip make the long journey south to take on the Gaels in Round 2 next Sunday.
