Unfortunately, our seniors Revere D Championship campaign has come to an end as they suffered defeat in both rounds of their group.
Kildangan took on St Laurence’s at home in the opening round of the championship on Tuesday 16th July and it was our slow start which may have cost us to a certain extent. St Laurence’s were quick off the mark and managed to kick 8 points with no reply before we finally pulled one back through Daniel Gilbert. But somewhat poor in defense we conceded two quick and easy goals either side of a Daniel Gilbert free which left the score 2-11 to 0-2 in favour of the visitors. Laurence’s punished our mistakes, leaving the score 3-13 to 0-3 at half time and a mountain for us to climb. Although we came back out looking ready for the challenge, scoring some lovely points through Robert McGrath, Damien Broughall and Joey O’Sullivan, it was Laurence’s who would come out on top, giving us plenty to think about heading into round 2 as the match ended on a score line of 5-18 to 0-11.
Going into round 2 the lads knew they had plenty to prove and the spectators hoped they would be able to do so as they took on Two Mile House away on Monday 22nd July. Although it was a sunny summers evening in Two Mile House there was no doubt that the wind played a factor throughout the game but ultimately it would be our own errors and decision making which would cost us. Two Mile House playing with the wind started well and kicked a few points before Kildangan replied through Bernard Behan but unfortunately similar to the Laurence’s game we conceded a goal early on and as we looked for the reply through Daniel Gilbert we were denied by the TMH keeper and punished on the counter attack as TMH managed to cut through our defense and extend their lead by another goal. Kildangan managed to pull a couple of points back before half time through Daniel Gilbert and Luke Barry but the half time score certainly wasn’t in our favour as the home side led 2-8 to 0-3.
Beginning the second half as they left off, TMH managed to score two quick goals along with a couple of points but Kildangan not giving up without a fight scored two goals of our own through Robert Hanley and Daniel Gilbert. Kildangan battled on to score another 2 points through Robert Hanley and Daniel Gilbert but TMH were ultimately the better team on the night, ending the game on a score line of 4-15 to 2-5.
It was a season of highs and lows which saw some of our younger lads making the step up to the senior ranks and some of the older lads hang up their boots but now with the Senior season ending all that remains is to thank the manager, selectors, players and supporters for everything in 2019. Some of the younger guys will now go on to compete in the other championships and there is no better way to encourage them and secure the future of Kildangan GAA than by going to the games and cheering them on.
