basic microfluidics supplies

SILICON WAFERS

Silicon Sense, Inc.

603-891-4248

3" wafers, orientation <100>, thickness: 15+-2 mil, 25 wafers / box

type / dopant: N/Phos, resistivity: 1-10, grade: test

TUBING

- PTFE #30 AWG Thin Wall Tubing Natural, ID=0.012”, OD=0.030”, 100 ft

Provider: Cole Parmer; 800-323-4340, item #: 06417-11 (this tubing is

commonly inserted directly into the device, without a connector)

- Tygon microbore tubing, ID=0.02”, OD=0.06”, 100 ft

Provider: Cole Parmer; item #: EW-06418-02 (I use this tubing with

metal connectors, see below)

- small metal tubing (metal posts): RW 23, type 316L (length = 0.3”), ID=0.013”,

OD=0.025”, 100 pieces

Provider: New England Small Tubing Comp., Litchfield, NH; 603-429-1600

(fits Tygon tubing, but not PTFE tubing)

NEEDLES & STUBS

- Luer Stub Adapter, OD=0.65 mm (for Tygon tubing)

Provider: Becton Dickinson, Franklin Lakes, NJ

- Luer Stub 27 ½, (for PTFE tubing)

Provider: Becton Dickinson, Franklin Lakes, NJ

commonly, 1/2" or 1" is sufficient, and I prefer stubs to needles

GASTIGHT SYRINGES

recommended for any use, especially at low flow rates (up to ~200 ul/hr)

also recommended for any gradient applications

I don't recommend using plastic syringes, because they're not gastight (that is, you can get air bubbles forming in the syringe and tubing). If you can use a glass syringe for cell applications, try to keep the cells confined to the tubing.

- 500 ul, item #: 81220

- 50 ul, item #: 80920

- 250 ul, item #: 81120

- 5 ml, item # 81520

Provider: Hamilton Company, Reno, NV; 800-648-5950 (these come with a glass base, so they tend to break)

even better: SGE, as they come with a metal base

- 1 ml, item #: 008025

- 2.5ml, item #: 008425

- 5 ml, item #: 008762

SYRINGE PUMP

I recommend Harvard PHD 22/2000 Pump (infuse + withdraw, doesn't have to be programmable, goes beyond 3000ul/hr). It's the most precise syringe pump I've worked with (highest precision ~0.01%). Make sure you match the syringe to the applied flow rate (i.e. don't use 5 ml syringe for a 100ul/hr flow rate, but use 500ul or 1 ml syringe).

ELASTOMER

- PDMS: Sylgard 184

http://www.ellsworth.com/sylgard.html?gclid=CPPTmLKw-KICFSI55QodRRdFlQ

2-part elastomer, I recommend the 0.5 kg kit

- RTV: from GE Chemicals

(bad for protein, so I assume bad for cells, but in general great to work with, especially for multiplayer microfluidic devices)

preferred distributor is Hisco
