Kilroy was here

Thanks to Ray O'.

Not all of the info can be verified, but likely true and at least interesting to us old folks that recall it.

This is interesting ... I have often wondered about Kilroy ... now I know.

Great piece of history.

Anyone born in the mid thirties (or earlier) knew Kilroy.

We didn't know why but we had lapel pins with his nose hanging over the label and the top of his face above his nose with his hands hanging over the label too.

I believe it was orange colored.

No one knew why he was so well known but we all joined in!

Kind of a war story – now we know! INTERESTING?~~~~

KILROY WAS HERE! WHO THE HECK WAS KILROY?

In 1946 the American Transit Association, through its radio program, "Speak to America ," sponsored a nationwide contest to find the REAL Kilroy,

offering a prize of a real trolley car to the person who could prove himself to be the genuine article.

Almost 40 men stepped forward to make that claim, but only James Kilroy from Halifax , Massachusetts , had evidence of his identity.

Kilroy was a 46-year old shipyard worker during the war who worked as a checker

at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy . His job was to go around and check

on the number of rivets completed.

Riveters were on piecework and got paid by the rivet.

Kilroy would count a block of rivets and put a check mark in semi-waxed lumber

chalk, so the rivets wouldn't be counted twice. When Kilroy went off duty,

the riveters would erase the mark. Later on, an off-shift inspector would

come through and count the rivets a second time, resulting in double pay

for the riveters.

One day Kilroy's boss called him into his office. The foreman was upset about all

the wages being paid to riveters, and asked him to investigate. It was

then he realized what had been going on.

The tight spaces he had to crawl in to check the rivets didn't lend themselves

to lugging around a paint can and brush, so Kilroy decided to stick with

the waxy chalk. He continued to put his checkmark on each job he inspected,

but added KILROY WAS HERE in king-sized letters next to the check, and eventually

added the sketch of the chap with the long nose peering over the fence and

that became part of the Kilroy message. Once he did that, the riveters stopped

trying to wipe away his marks.

Ordinarily the rivets and chalk marks would have been covered up with paint. With war on, however, ships were leaving the Quincy Yard so fast that there wasn't

time to paint them. As a result, Kilroy's inspection "trademark" was seen

by thousands of servicemen who boarded the troopships the yard produced.

His message apparently rang a bell with the servicemen, because they

picked it up and spread it all over Europe and the South Pacific. Before

war's end, "Kilroy" had been here, there, and everywhere on the long hauls

to Berlin and Tokyo .

To the troops outbound in those ships, however, he was a complete mystery; all

they knew for sure was that some jerk named Kilroy had "been there first."

As a joke, U.S. servicemen began placing the graffiti wherever they

landed, claiming it was already there when they arrived.

Kilroy became the U.S. super-GI who had always "already been" wherever GIs went.

It became a challenge to place the logo in the most unlikely places

imaginable (it is said to be atop Mt. Everest , the Statue of Liberty, the

underside of l’Arc De Triomphe, and even scrawled in the dust on the

moon).

As the war went on, the legend grew. Underwater demolition teams routinely

sneaked ashore on Japanese-held islands in the Pacific to map the terrain

for coming invasions by U.S. troops (and thus, presumably, were the first

GI's there). On one occasion, however, they reported seeing enemy troops

painting over the Kilroy logo! In 1945, an outhouse was built for the

exclusive use of Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill at the Potsdam conference.

Its’ first occupant was Stalin, who emerged and asked

his aide (in Russian), "Who is Kilroy?"

To help prove his authenticity in 1946, James Kilroy brought along officials from

the shipyard and some of the riveters. He won the trolley car, which he

gave to his nine children as a Christmas gift and set it up as a playhouse

in the Kilroy front yard in Halifax , Massachusetts ..

If you check the WWII memorial in Washington DC , you will see Kilroy peeking

over a wall!!!

So, now you know!

In God We Trust

" Much of life can never be explained but only witnessed."

- Rachel Naomi Remen, MD

NAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the

tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong

bond with a giant male century-old tortoise in an animal

facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said.

The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about

300 kilograms (650 pounds ), was swept down Sabaki

River into the Indian Ocean , then forced back to shore

when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on

December 26, before wildlife rangers rescued him.

"It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a

male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to

be very happy with being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu,

who is in charge of Lafarge Park , told AFP.

"After it was swept away and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized.

It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother.

Fortunately it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond.

They swim, eat and sleep together," the ecologist added.

"The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it followed its mother.

If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive,

as if protecting its biological mother," Kahumbu added.

"The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and

by nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their

mothers for four years," he explained.

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,

but by the moments that take our breath away."

This is a real story that shows that our differences don't matter

much when we need the comfort of another.

We could all learn a lesson from these two creatures of God,

"Look beyond the differences and find a way to walk the path together."

98 and no enemies - human interest story

Toward the end of Sunday service, the Minister asked,

' How many of you have forgiven your enemies? '

80% held up their hands.

The Minister then repeated his question.

All responded this time, except one small elderly lady.

'Mrs. Neely?'; ' Are you not willing to forgive your enemies? '

I don't have any. 'She replied, smiling sweetly.

'Mrs. Neely, that is very unusual. How old are you? '

'Ninety-eight, 'she replied.

The congregation stood up and clapped their hands.

'Oh, Mrs. Neely, would you please come down in front & tell us all how a person can live ninety-eight years & not have an enemy in the world? '

The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, faced the congregation, and said,

' I outlived the bitches'.

HOPE YOU ENJOY THESE PRECIOUS PICTURES!

"Don ' t hurry, don ' t worry. You ' re only here for a short visit. So be sure to stop and smell the flowers."

An interesting bit of LoGo trivia...

Thanks to Mark G.

I was not aware of these things...guess I'll have to start watching logos more carefully.

If you look at the center of this logo, you can see two people enjoying a Tostito chip with a bowl of salsa. This logo conveys an idea of people connecting with each other.

.Formula 1

At first, this logo might not make much sense. But if you look closely, you'll see the number 1 in the negative space between the F and the red stripes. I also love how this logo communicates a feeling of speed.

.

Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers is a professional baseball team from Milwaukee, Wisconsin (well, duh…). Their logo is actually made up of the letters M (on top) and B (below the m). These two letters also form a baseball glove.

Northwest Airlines

This simple looking logo actually carries a lot of information. First of all you can see the letters N and W, the first two letters of the brand name. But what most people don't see is the compass that points to the Northwest, another reference to the brand name.

This logo doesn't seem to hide much at first sight, but it gives you a little insight in the philosophy behind the brand. First of all, the yellow swoosh looks like a smile: Amazon wants to have the best customer satisfaction. The swoosh also connects the letters a and z, meaning that this store has everything from a to z.

Toblerone

Toblerone is a chocolate-company from Bern, Switzerland. Bern is sometimes called 'The City Of Bears'. They have incorporated this idea in the Toblerone logo, because if you look closely, you'll see the silhouette of a bear.

Baskin Robins

The old logo of Baskin Robbins had the number 31 with an arc above it. The new logo took this idea to the next level. The pink parts of the BR still form the number 31, a reference to the 31 flavors.

Sony Vaio

Sony Vaio is a well known brand of laptops. But did you know that the name Vaio logo also had a hidden meaning? Well, the first two letters represent the basic analogue signal. The last two letters look like a 1 and 0, representing the digital signal.

Do you see any arrows on FedEx's logo? I saw it a few times at another site saying that there's an arrow hidden in the FedEx arrow, but I couldn't find it. I now know where it is, it's your turn to find it.

Ok, give up? (scroll down)

(The clue is that the arrow is located in between the alphabet E and X, and the arrow is white, acting as a background.)

Christmas Gathering

Thai Yoga Massage

"The Sacred Dance"

17-28 Dec 2010

Winter is the end of all seasons. Unification with this element means allowing the yin principle to manifest - becoming more receptive and introspective. Cold and darkness drive us to seek inner warmth. It is a time to rest, meditate deeply, refine spiritual essence and store physical energy. This is what we will try to share during our Christmas course, using Thai Massage as a vehicle for this journey of self discovery. Christmas is also a time of boundless consumerism and so to bring awareness to the simple things in life, is the biggest gift we can offer to ourselves and to others.

Thai yoga massage is a sacred dance. It is holy communion between two people used to unblock energy stagnation. It is essentially an ancient Eastern healing technique used as a tool to awaken our spiritual flame and inner therapist. Learning the beautiful art of traditional Thai massage is not just about memorising a sequence of exercises, nor about thinking that we can cure someone of their sickness. It is about learning to give from the heart with compassion and to have deep undertsanding of the other person's suffering. Learning how to give and to receive....to touch....to breathe....to feel. It is a unique fusion of Thai massage, Yoga and Meditation. When we are connected to the Divine, the healing process happens all by itself. We are just channels to remind eachother of this. And thus the dance begins........
