Fact/Assertion Thesis

Fact/Assertion Thesis Statements are made up of two parts...

1) a fact

2) an assertion (argument)

Hence the name "fact/assertion thesis".

Example 1

"Although they require a great amount time and dedication, dogs are the most rewarding pet a family could ever own."

Fact: dogs require a great amount of time and dedication

Assertion: dogs are the most rewarding pet a family could ever own.

Test Your Thesis

Your "assertion" must be a debatable statement and your "fact" must not be debatable.Test yours by asking yourself, "could someone argue against my assertion? Could someone argue the OPPOSITE is true?"

EXAMPLE 2

Because half of all American elementary school children consume nine times the recommended daily allowance of sugar, schools should be required to replace the beverages in soda machines with healthy alternatives.

Fact: half of all American elementary school children consume nine times the recommended daily allowance of sugar

Assertion: schools should be required to replace the beverages in soda machines with healthy alternatives.

TIPS

    • Use one of the following words in your thesis: "Although", "Since", "Because", "Despite", "Due to".

    • Don't be afraid of writing a long sentence, just make sure you avoid making it a run-on and avoid the comma splice.
