Synecdoche
Synecdoche is a figure of speech in which a part of something is used to represent the whole, or vice versa. Here are five examples:
"All hands on deck."
Here, "hands" refers to the entire crew or people on the ship, not just their hands.
"The White House issued a statement."
In this example, "the White House" is used to refer to the President or the administration.
"The city mourned the loss of a great artist."
"The city" represents the people within the city who mourned the loss.
"Give me a hand with these groceries."
"Hand" is used to refer to help or assistance.
"The pen is mightier than the sword."
Here, "pen" refers to writing and "sword" to military force, representing the power of language over violence.
