Dear 8th Grade Students & Parents,
Given that the number of DCS-related emails has been overwhelming since school started, I will try to keep this short(er).
1. Science This Week: One of the big topics of this unit is been the introduction and application of the scientific method. The students have begun the Fall Science Experiment and should have proposed some ideas using this form and are now awaiting my comments that I will enter onto this spreadsheet this weekend. Since it is based on personal interest, this is a project that will take various forms for different kids, but the common factor is that they will gain experience stating a testable question, devising an experiment, isolating variables, collecting data, and communicating results. I am hoping that the students will perform some excellent experiments (at home, ha!) over the next few weeks.
2. Optional Redwoods Overnight Camping Trip: My idea for a little informal just-for-fun trip has become the catalyst of much discussion and reflection. There were concerns that a situation in which some kids would go and others wouldn't might create tensions in students' relationships, even in an "anyone who wants to can come" situation. I surveyed all the the students, and indeed there were 8 kids who expressed the possibility of that downside. The survey also showed that about 30 students would like to go, although only 10 have filled out the "interested" form. So, it is with caution that I would like to move forward with this and get a final count of kids who can commit to going as well as parents who are willing to reserve a site, come on the trip, and "manage" a group of 8 kids at a campsite. Please respond to this email (kids or students) if you are "in". :)
3. Identity & Community Unit: One all-8th grade experience is a thematic unit of study & action. For my class we've gotten a late start, but today we jumped in with the My Name writing piece.
4. Non-Fiction Friday: On an almost-weekly basis I will be asking the kids to read some non-fiction, preferably science current events. They write a summary of what they read and why they chose it, and then are to lead a discussion with you (or any adult), get your comment and/or signature, and return the form on Monday. Please remind your student that you eagerly await the experience!
5. Back to School Night: This coming Wednesday we will have the middle school BTSN from 7:15 to 8:15. You (parents) will follow your student's schedule to each of the 4 academic subjects at 15 minute intervals, and we teachers will try to squeeze in as much information as possible in that short time. I really am looking forward to meeting each of you, but I think that I'll have to wait for PA102 for the time to really get to know you and discuss many aspects of 8th grade, parent involvement, and the amazing opportunities that we all have at DCS.
6. Some Odd Requests: On the for-parents page of my site I have listed a few things that I'm hoping some of you might be able to help with. Take a look if you like, and let me know if one of those things matches your skills/preferences/access.
Thanks for listening, and now I get to take the family over the hill to catch sunset at the beach!
Chris
