Campbell Douglas, F.R.I.B.A.
was born in the Manse of Kilbarchen, where his father was parish minister, in the year 1828.
He was educated at home till such time as he went to the University of Glasgow.
His apprenticeship was served in the office of John T. Rochead, an architect of distinction, whose works in Glasgow are still much admired.
After finishing his apprenticeship Mr. Douglas’ studied took him field, and he has worked in several important offices both in Ireland and England.
The advantage this course of study is seen in his work, which is not unnecessarily hampered by local traditions or ideas.
Mr Douglas’ social qualifications are of a high order, he makes a charming host either in town or country, sings a good song, and tells and appreciated the finer points of good story.
Mr. Douglas is a great traveller, is interested in botany and is an enthusiastic cremations. He is at present for the third time president of Glasgow Architectural Society, and has been a fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects for a number of years. Two years ago he was elected a vice-president of that body, the first time such an honor had been paid to a provincial architect.
Mr. Douglas’s work may be seen all over Scotland, both in town and country.

(1) Scottish Civil Engineer. Source: Thomas Constable, Memoir of Lewis D. B. Gordon, 1877.
Introduction: Lewis Gordon was a civil engineer, born in Edinburgh on 6 March 1815. In 1835 he went to work for Marc Isambard Brunel on the construction of the Thames Tunnel, where he stayed until 1837. In 1838 he attended the Freiberg School of Mines in Germany, and on completion of his studies returned to Britain in 1840. Having seen wire ropes in use in the German mines, Gordon introduced them to England under a patent taken out in connection with Robert S. Newall and Charles Liddell, with whom he became partners. Newall & Company used the wire rope technology to armour some of the early submarine cables, beginning with the 1851 Dover-Calais cable, and other manufacturers soon adopted similar methods.
Gordon worked on a number of cables with Newall. In the book Memoir of Lewis D. B. Gordon, written by his friend Thomas Constable after Gordon’s death in 1876 and published in 1877 “for private circulation”, his biographer notes: On the 2d June 1852 Lewis tells of the union by submarine cable of England and Ireland, and on the 6th May 1853 I find a telegram to the following effect:—“Union of Belgium and England completed twenty minutes before one p.m.”
It’s likely that Gordon also worked on subsequent cables, but the Memoir, which is based largely on Gordon’s correspondence and is mainly concerned with Gordon’s personal and family life, has large gaps in this area. The next mention of cables comes in 1858, when Newall & Company laid the Red Sea cable; in November of that year the firm was also awarded the contract to lay a cable from Singapore to Batavia. The story of the cable in the Memoir begins in late November 1858 with the signing of the contract.

He was one of a rare breed, a Western banker who, during the Meiji period, earned the trust of the Japanese. His ‘Japanese’ career was in two parts. In the 1870s in Tokyo, he was invited to teach the first generation of young Japanese bankers the elements of modern Western banking, book-keeping, auditing and accounting. In the 1900s, in London, he was
an important agent who smoothed the way for the Japanese government to borrow large sums on the London money market.
A closer look at Shand’s career clearly demonstrates the remarkable progress which Japan had made in the management of its financial affairs over the hectic Meiji years. During the early 1870s, when Shand was first involved, there was little or no order in Japanese banking. The country was awash with debased paper money, including hansatsu, the paper money of the disbanded clans. The idea of a nationwide banking system had yet to emerge and the confusion endemic in the country fuelled inflationary pressures. By 1900, due largely to the control exerted by Matsukata Masayoshi,1 the strong man of Japanese banking, Japan was on the Gold Standard (1897) and from 1902 was linked through the Anglo-Japanese Alliance with Great Britain.
Alexander Allan Shand was a Scotsman, born in Turriff, Aberdeenshire, on 11 February 1844, the son of James Shand, surgeon, and Margaret Allan. He is thought to have been trained in a Scottish bank in Aberdeen; he may have moved to serve in a bank in London before becoming, by 1863, an officer in the Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China in Hong Kong.
Early in 1864 A.A. Shand, at the age of 20, was appointed acting manager of the newly opened office of the Chartered Mercantile Bank in Yokohama (at Lot 78, which was situated south of ‘the great pier, some half mile inland) with W.D. Henderson as acting accountant and J. Watson as his assistant. It was an extraordinary time to be in Japan. Yokohama, a mere sixteen miles from Edo, later renamed Tokyo, the power base of the Shogunate, had (together with Nagasaki and Hakodate) been opened to foreign merchants as a treaty port on 1 July 1859.
Traders, moody British, had rushed ashore, eager to gain trading advantage. Inevitably, but more reluctantly, Western bankers, including, first, the Central Bank of India and secondly, the Chartered Mercantile Bank, opened sub-offices, to follow the merchants.“
It was a turbulent period, presaging the fall of the old Bakufu regime. The bombardment by Western guns of Kagoshima, the capital of the Satsuma han, in August 1863, and that of the batteries of Choshu at the Straits of Shimonoseki in September 1864, shattered the myth, for some intelligent Choshu and Satsuma samurai, that the Japanese had the option of keeping the foreigners out. In March 1866 some Choshu samurai led by Kido Takayoshi (1833-1877) and some Satsuma samurai, led by Saigo Takamori (1828-1877) sank their differences and concluded the Sat-Cho Alliance. This was the preliminary to the military campaigns of 1867-68 which routed the Shogunate and elevated the young Meiji Emperor to a crucial role as the head of a forward-looking reforming government.
