Oct. 18, 2025: イザベラ･バード、ゴードン･カミングとジョン･F･キャンベルの関係.Isabella Bird, Constance Gordon-Cumming, John F. Campbell.
＋この3人は19世紀後半のイギリス人旅行作家で、ともにスコットランドのヘブリディーズを出発点とした。それぞれの人物に関する研究はあるが、3人の関係についてはほとんど知られていない。アイラのキャンベル（1821年生まれ）とゴードン･カミング（1837年生まれ）はいとこ同士で、ゴードン･カミングとバードは親友同士である。「アイラのキャンベル」が1874-75年に日本を訪れ、1876年に旅行記を出版すると、ゴードン･カミングは1878-79年に、バードは1878年に日本にやって来た。後者二人の旅行記には助言者としてキャンベルの名前がでてくるので、彼女らを日本に誘ったのはキャンベルの旅行記であった。ゴードン・カミングは富士山のすばらしい絵画を、バードは北日本の旅行記を残した。 Click here or visit <Isabella Bird> and <John F. --These three were British travel writers of the late nineteenth century, all of whom took the Scottish Hebrides as their starting point. While there is research on each individual, little is known about the relationship between the three. Campbell of Islay (born 1821) and Gordon Cumming (born 1837) were cousins, and Gordon Cumming and Bird were close friends. When Campbell of Islay visited Japan in 1874-75 and published her travelogue in 1876, Gordon Cumming came to Japan in 1878-79 and Bird in 1878. Campbell's name appears as an advisor in the travelogues of the latter two, so it was Campbell's travelogue that invited them to Japan. Gordon Cumming left behind magnificent paintings of Mount Fuji, while Bird left behind a travelogue of northern Japan. Click here or visit <Isabella Bird> and <John F. May 6, 2024: 1874年、ジョン･キャンベルと武田昌次、吉井友実、黒田長溥Campbell met Takeda, Yoshii, Kuroda at Tokyo.
＋キャンベル『私の周遊記（1876）』は驚異の本である。キャンベルは明治政府官僚たち、その中でも岩倉使節団やウィーン万国博覧会に参加したものたちと、親しく交流したことが述べられている。マクヴェインからの紹介があったからだが、そればかりではなく、キャンベル自身、1872年から73年にかけてロンドンで彼らに便宜を提供していたからであろう。請う参照、5.Anglo-Japanese>John F. Campbell from Left side Index Bar.
--Campbell's My Circular Notes (1876) is a marvellous book. It describes Campbell's close contacts with Meiji government officials, among them those who participated in the Iwakura Mission and the Vienna World's Expo. Not only because he was introduced to them by McVean, but also because Campbell himself provided them with facilities in London in 1872-73. See 5.Anglo-Japanese>John F. --The deciphering of the C.A. McVean Archives and the writings of J.F. Campbell will reveal why Isabella Bird came to Japan. The preface to "Unbeaten Tracks in Japan (1880)" is a complete fabrication. Bird sisters have stayed at Free Church manse of Iona in 1866 for a month. December 2, 2023: 19世紀後半名船としての鯉魚門.Ly-ee-moon, a genuine vessel of the second half of 19th century.
＋函館市立博物館に送る「太平丸/鯉魚門」と「室田秀雄」に関する資料をまとめていたら、鯉魚門に関して続々と新たな図像資料がでてきました。幕府が購入した蒸気クリッパー船ですが、19世紀後半、カティーサークなどにならぶ名船でした。フルテキストは、左インデックスから、「Ly-ee-moon.鯉魚門･太平丸」をご覧ください。
--When researching documents relating to the Taihei-maru/Ly-ee-moon and Murota Hideo to be sent to the Hakodate City Museum, a series of new iconographic documents concerning the Ly-ee-moon came to light. November 27, 2023: J.F. Campbell, a Mastermind of Anglo-Japanese Exchange in Early Meiji.明治初期日英交流の立役者としてのJ.F. キャンベル
＋つい最近、粂和沙氏の「フランク・ディロンと日本」（実践女子大學美學美術史學36号）を拝読し、ジャポニズムにおけるディロンの役割の一端を垣間見ることができました。本論考も含め、ディロンは大阪造幣寮に貨幣デザイン師として雇われていた息子を頼りに来日したと広く信じられていますが、実はそうではありません。1875年5月に一年間の世界一周を終えて帰国したジョン・フランシス・キャンベルは、日本で買い漁ってきた美術工芸品をロンドンの美術界で展示し、1876年早々学術クラブ「アセニウム・クラブ」で『私の周遊記My Circular Notes』を発表します。添付された100枚を越えるスケッチのうち、30枚ほどが日本での作成になります。「アセニウム・クラブ」での発表会にフランク・ディロンやウィリアム・バージェスが出席しており、またイザベラ・バードはこの出版物を手にとって読みました。おそらく、ジョシア・コンダーもまた師匠のバージェスから借りて目を通したと思われます。このように見てくると、明治初期の日英交流にキャンベルの果たした役割ははかりしれません。彼は、行政官、民俗学者、科学者、画家、文筆家として多才な人で、スコットランド・西ハイランドのフォークロア研究を除けば、彼の人物像はまったく分かっていません。日英交流史研究において、『私の周遊記』は最重要書物です。
--.Scholar has never argued role of John Francis Campbell as mastermind of Anglo-Japanese cultural exchange in the early Meiji period. He was so talented man as government officer, folklorist, scientist, artist and travel writer, and so hard to describe him from one discipline. His government post and status allowed him to commit himself into many fields. As he did not publish his works in simple popular style, his works have not been popular. Probably no Japanese scholars have read "My Circular Notes (1876)," Through writing a biographical book of Colin Alexander McVean, I found J.F. Campbell gave much influence into Anglo-Japanese cultural exchange in early Meiji period. One young Japanese scholar just started argument of British artists who visited Japan in early Meiji, but she did not know why Frank Dillon came to Japan and what he did in London after returning home.

--The following is an obituary published in the British Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society about Palmer, who is regarded as the father of the Yokohama Waterworks. It is believed that the contents are not found in Grandfather Palmer by Jiro Higuchi.
October 22, 2023: Large Revision on <Isabella Bird>.イザベラ･バード項目の大改訂
--After carefully analysing John H. Gubbins' letter to Colin A. McVean, I found the connection among McVean, John F. Campbell, Gubbins, Charles H. Dallas and Bird. McVean largely helped preparation of Bird's journey to Japan by providing various information of Japan, including his experience and articles of Gubbins and Dallas, and by introducing her important figures such as Hepburn and Fyson. Campbell surely introduced her Harry Parks who once worked under Granville Leveson Gower and George Campbell, both relatives of John F. Campbell.
＋ガビンズがマクヴェインに宛てた手紙を注意深く分析した結果、間違いなくマクヴェインがバードの日本行きににさまざまな便宜を提供していたことがわかりました。マクヴェインは自らの横浜、鎌倉、東京、日光、軽井沢などの知見を語ってあげ、また大和屋敷の常連客だったチャールズ・ダラス、ジョン･ガビンズ、フィリップ・ファイソンらの東北地方の旅行記を見せてあげたようです。さらに、マクヴェインはヘップバーンなどの知人を、キャンベルの方はハリー･パークスなどをバードに紹介しました。キャンベルの従兄弟であるジョージ･キャンベルは元外相、義弟のグランヴィル・ルーソン・ゴアは前外相で、パークスはバードに特別に親切にする必要がありました。実質的には、パークスの下で公使館職員であったガビンズがこまごまとした準備を手伝い、ガビンズにとっては＜招かざる客・やっかいな客＞だったようです。
October 1, 2023: Travel Logs of the Nakasendo by John F. Campbell and C.A. McVean.ジョン・キャンベルとマクヴェインの中山道紀行の解読
--After I visited the Usui Pass and Karuizawa town last August, I sent travel logs of J.F. Campbell who visited the Nakasendo in December 1874 and January 1875 to the Karuizawa Town Museum.
＋8月に碓氷峠と軽井沢を訪問し、ジョン･キャンベルとマクヴェインの旅行記の確認を行いました。キャンベルとマクヴェインの旅行記の部分を邦訳し、軽井沢町郷土資料館の方にお送りしました。同博物館には、ガビンズの軽井沢別荘の棟札が展示されてあり、これは大きな発見でした。
August 13, 2023: Isabella Bird and Colin McVean.イザベラ･バードとマクヴェインの深い関係
--I got a new finding after Dr Cronin, Queen Mary University inquired me about Isabella Bird's preparation of journey to Japan. Anna Stoddart described "Lady Middleton, who secured for Miss Bird a valuable introduction to Sir Harry and Lady Parkes from the Duke of Argyll, had asked her to choose and purchase curios, embroideries and bronzes. She was equipped altogether with forty letters to influential residents. The parting with her sister was unspeakably sad. Henrietta was not well, and Dr. Bishop was again in attendance." This description is completely wrong, as Bird first approached to John Francis Campbell, an authur of "My Circular Note (1876)" to collect information related to journey of Japan. Campbell advised her to meet Colin McVean who just returned to Scotland. Bird visited McVean's house at Iona and Edinburgh so often, and finally dicided to visit Japan. McVean provided her a lot of valuable information including name of his friends in Japan. The new finding is not that point, but that Bird has visited to Mull and Iona together with her sister during 1840s, and has collaboration with Captain Henry Otter for charity work in early 1860s. ＋クィーン･メリー大学のクローニン先生からの問い合わせを切っ掛けにして、バードとマクヴェインの関係に新発見があった。イザベラ･バードの伝記は1906年にアン・ストゥダート女史によって著され、これまでバードを知る定番資料となっている。この伝記はバードが日本にやってくる経緯を「ミドルトン伯爵夫人は、アーガイル侯爵を通してバードにパークスとパークス婦人を紹介した」と書いてあり、クローニン先生はそれ本当かとたずねてきた。マクヴェイン伝の最後尾に書いたように、事実はそうではなく、1876年、ジョン･フランシス･キャンベルが『私の周遊記』を出版するとすぐにバードは日本に興味を持ち、キャンベルに会いに行った。キャンベルは、自分よりもつい最近帰国したばかりのマクヴェインの方がよく知っているので、彼をバードに紹介した。1876年8月にマクヴェインは家族とともにエジンバラとアイオナに戻ると、バードは一年以上に渡って延べ数十回以上も会いに来て、日本について情報収集した。キャンベルは女一人で行くのは無茶だと反対するが、マクヴェインは日本にいる友人たちを紹介してあげ、1978年4月6日、バードはイギリスを出発する。このキャンベルは、アーガイル公爵（ジョージ・キャンベル）と従兄弟関係にあり、ともに政府要職に就いていた。新たに発見したのは以上のことではなく、ストゥダート女史はバードが1840年代に妹のハリエットの病気療養ためマル島に滞在し、また1860年代、元海軍提督ヘンリー･オットーとチャリティ運動を協同するためにオバンを訪問したと記している。するとバードは幼いマクヴェインとアイオナ島で会っており、またマクヴェインとチーズマンの師匠であるオットーと旧知であり、マクヴェインはバードに特別に親切にする理由があったのだ。バードは旅行作家として成功するためにどのように書けばいいのかをよく知っていたので、旅の情報源を決して明かさなかった。読者をひき付けるためには、その日その場所ですべて新たに発見したと書いた。サイドバーから<Isabella Birdイザベラ･バード>をご覧ください。
March 7, 2022: James H. Butt's Watercolour Paints of Japanese Scenery?. ジェームス・バットの水彩画が横浜開港資料館の出版物に??
--I am so surprised James Butt's paintings were introduced by the Yokohama City Archive in 2021. The author says, "this article should be the first introduction of Butt's paintings in Japan. I already did it in 2018.
＋横浜開港資料館編『日英関係史』(2021年)にジェームス・バットについての記事を見つけて驚きました。著者は「日本で知られていなかったもの」と書いていますが、、、、このサイトでは4年以上前に紹介していますが。あと、ミットフォードのバッツフォード邸については12年以上も前に紹介済み。
December 17, 2021: Book-Review of Rachel Hewitt"s Map of a Nation (2011).書評：レイチェル･ヒューイット著『国家の地図』
--The author highlighted the early stage of the Ordnance Survey, which David Watson, Robert Dundas and William Roy, three Scottish played essential roles.
+著者はイギリスの陸軍測量局の創生期について緻密な議論をし、18世紀半ば、そこで三人の人物が決定的役割を果たしたことを明らかにしています。エジンバラ南西部のアーニストンの大法律家ロバート･ダンダスは大の地図好きで、妻の弟のデヴィッド･ワトソンDavid Watsonを測量師に育成した。このデヴィッドは工兵隊に入りウィリアム・ロイWilliam Rayを雇い、陸軍測量Ordnance Surveyを始めたという話。コリン・マクヴェインが実務研修したマカンデリシュ・アンド・ダンダス技術事務所は、ダンダス家出身のジョン･フランシス･ダンダスJohn Francis Dundasが経営していた。おそらく、18世紀末から19世紀にかけてインド南部とジャワ島を測量したコリン・マッケンジーColin Mackenzieもまた、ダンダスやロイらからによって測量を習ったのでしょう。

--I charted route of HKS Sylvia in 1867-70 when William F. Maxwell and James Butt were on board.
+ウィリアム・マックスウェルとジェームス・ブットが乗船していた時期のシルヴィア号のルートを図示してみました。1867年暮れに日本海行きに到着しましたが、幕府海軍とも明治政府兵部省とも共同測量はできず、やっと1872年に兵部省から陸軍と海軍が別れるとともに、海軍省水路局と共同事業を始めました。
June 7, 2020: James Butt, a hydrographer of HMS. Sylvia paints Japanイギリス海軍測量師ブットによる日本各地の風景
-I just found a number of paintings of Japan in 1868-1870, which were drawn by James Butt, a hydrographer of HMS Sylvia. The ship was commanded by Captain Brooker, assisted by William maxwell, and arrived at Yokohama in the end of 1867, and soon moved to Nagasaki to get start of hydrographic survey. Most of hydrographers of Royal Navy was good painter including Butt. The ship visited to Sakitsu bay of Amakusa, probably to find Japanese Christian in 1868.
・一昨年、イギリス海事博物館でシルヴィア号関連の資料を漁っていたときの若手測量士官ジェームス･ヘンリー･バットによる水彩画集を発見しました。マクヴェイン伝の中ですでに資料として用いていますが、その全貌を<James H. Butt>項目で紹介します。優れた絵描きでもあり、ブットは日本を気に入ったのか20枚近く描きました。本邦初公開のものです。

May 13, 2020: Different Viewpoints Btwn American and British Art Scholars in the Meiji Japan.明治初期におけるイギリス人とアメリカ人美術研究者の視点の違い
-William Anderson found Kyosai Kawanabe, a painter of Ukiyoe, and introduced him to the British art scene in 1870s, while Ernest Fenollosa highly appreciated Kano School. The difference of viewpoints between two came from the preference of the British and American, that is, the British preferred lesser art, while American preferred clasic/authentic art.
・明治日本に来訪した外国人の中で、きちんとした審美眼を持ったイギリス人は1874年のジョン･キャンベルJohn Campbellが最初で、それに触発されたのが当時海軍雇医師でウィリアム･アンダーソンWilliam Anderson1842-1900。その後、造幣寮雇エドワード･ディロンEdward Dillon, c.1840-1909やクリストファー･ドレッサーChristopher Dresser, 1834-1904が続く。アンダーソンは河鍋暁斎を最初に外国に紹介したことで知られ、イギリス人は正統的な日本美術よりも浮世絵や根付けなどのレサーアートに関心をしめした。1870年代末、アーネスト･フェノロサが日本の正統古典美術の狩野派を見いだすのとは対照的である。これは、イギリス人とアメリカ人の審美眼の違いなのなのであろう。

January 4 2020: Significance of John Francis Campbell's "My Circular Notes".ジョン F.キャンベル『私の周遊記』の重要性
-Campbell looked forward to visiting to Shinsyu, where he regarded it as Japan's Highliands. But it was not treasure of fair tales, Campbell had to oriented to the Nanbu, centre of fair tales. Godfrey, British Officer of Japan's Mining, has visted Nanbu to make research of iron-making at Hashino and Kamaishi around 1870. However, Nanbu or Tono as a centre of fair tales was discovered by Sasaki Kizen and Yanagida Kunio 30 years after Campbell called to Japan.
・ミットフォード、アーネスト･サトウ、チェンバレンなどの数人のイギリス人たちは幕末から明治初期の日本の文物に興味を示し、その記録を文章に残してくれました。当時の日本人はというと、目まぐるしく変わる時代にあって自らの記録を残してこなかったので、外国人の著作は同時代の様子を知るための大変重要な資料となっています。そのイギリス人の中でキャンベルの立つ位置は大変重要です。彼は来日前、スコットランドのハイランドの民話採集とその解読を行い、文化人類学研究の開拓者となっていました。政治経済の中心である大都市ではなく、かつて栄えたハイランドにこそケルト文化が面々と受け継がれていることを教えてくれました。キャンベルが東京での用事を済ますと、天皇との謁見も断り日本におけるハイランドである信州を目指しました。当時の外国人から軽井沢から信州にかけてはハイランドとして映り、その後日本アルプスと親しまれていきました。しかし、信州は民話の宝庫ではなく、今思えば、キャンベルは工部省雇い鉱山技師のゴッドフレーの助言を聞いて南部地方を目指すべきだったと思われます。しかし、柳田国男と佐々木喜善により遠野が発見されるのは30年以上後のことです。キャンベルと柳田はともに行政官であり、民族研究の視点がよく似ています。どこからの英文学の大学院生さん、「ジョン･フランシス･キャンベルと柳田国男」という研究をしてくれませんか。
October 14 2019: <John Francis Campbell> Revised.ジョン F.キャンベルの項目を改定
-I revised an entry of <John Francis Campbell> and added new entry <Campbell-Recorder>. He was really great man, very talented man both in field of natural science and art & literature. Dr. Sancez's new publication described how Campbell invented and utilized sunshine recorder, and I understood that Campbell had enough knowledge to make observe the transit of Venus in Japan.
- <John Francis Campbellキャンベル>の項目を改定し、また新たに<Campbell-Recorder>の項目を付け加えました。1874年11月、マクヴェイン夫妻を頼って日本にやってきたジョン・キャンベルは実に興味深い人物でした。自然科学から文芸までの領域で一流の業績を残した人です。サンチェス氏の最新研究書は、キャンベルがどのように太陽光記録計を発明活用したのかが解説してあり、彼には日本で金星日面通過観測を実現する十分な能力があったことが理解できました。サンチェス他の著作については<Campbell-Recorder>項目を参照して下さい。日本ではどういうわけか「カンベル日照計」と訳されました。

Mcrch 31 2019: Japanese Village in London.1874ロンドンの日本文化村を追加
- K. Yamazoe was a Japanese carpenter, who was dispatched to Vienna 1873 to construct Japanese shrine and shop-house together with Matsuo, master-carpenter. Their craftsmanship was so sophisticated to impress visitors for Vienna Universal Exposition. When this exposition terminated, Alexandra Park & Co. of London bought these buildings and reconstructed them in London. Yamazoe was commissioned to reconstruct them and additionally build a DOZO, Japanese fireproof storehouse in "Japanese Village". This was a first DOZO built abroad. Yamazoe might meet McVean, and who invited him to the Home Affairs next year.
-一時帰国中のマクヴェインは、1874年1月から3月までロンドンにいて、各種観測観測器機の購入と荷造りを行いつつ、博物館調査に来ていた冨田と武田に便宜を提供していた。その時、佐野常民の紹介でYamazoeという日本人大工がロンドンに現れた。このYamazoeは山添喜三郎のことで、ウィーン万博の日本建築建設を担当し、博覧会終了後、イギリスのアレクサンドラ･パーク社（C.ドレッサーが理事）が展示日本建築を買い取ったので、ロンドンでの再建を山添が担うことになった。山添の記録によれば、神社と商店の移築に加えて、土蔵を新たに建設したとある。これは海外で作られた最初の土蔵ということになる。2010年、サウスケンジントンのV&A美術館で藤森先生が茶室製作展示を行ったが、藤森先生の卒業論文が山添に関する論考だったこと考えると、136年の時を経て山添・藤森がつながったともいえる。私はこの時藤森展示を手伝っていながら、山添のことをすっかり忘れていた。この日本建築群はJapanese Villageとして知られ人気を博したが、後に同パーク社が規模縮小を行ったために解体撤去されてしまったという。山添は、この時のマクヴェインとの縁で内務省営繕雇いとなる。
March 16, 2019: New Entry on the British Hydrographic Survey in Japanイギリス海軍による日本水路測量を追加
-Olive Checkland already described that the British Hydrographic Office made survey along coastal line around Japanese islandsin her book "Britain's Encounter with Meiji Japan (1989)." However, she did not mentioned that William Frederick Maxwell,RN, took part in this survey project in 1867-73. Maxwell was a friend of McVean, and wrote him several letters in 1868-72, advising situation of Japan. See new entry <Hydrographic Survey>.
-オーリブ・チェックランド氏は自著の中で幕末明治初期にイギリス海軍が日本沿岸で水路測量を実施したことを明らかにしています。測量艦船がシルビア号であったことも知られていましたが、この測量チームの中にウィリアム・マックスウェルが副艦長として乗船していたことを日本水路協会の長い氏の論文によって初めて知りました。マクヴェインの記録の中にこのマックスウェルがたびたび登場し、1868年に日本事情を教えてくれたり、1873年に測量司立ち上げに助言をしてくれていました。マックスウェルらによる日本現岸調査報告について新しい項目を作りました。
October 24, 2018: Major Crossman in earnest Satow's Diariesアーネスト･サトウ日記の中のクロスマン少佐
-It is well known that Harry Parkes and Earnest Satow met prominent figures in Chosyu, Satsuma and Tosa in 1867, the eve of the Meiji Restoration, as Satow described in his diaries. I read it again, and found another fellow, Major William Crossman. Crossman was a Royal Engineer, who was dispatched to Far East in that year to arrange diplomatic buildings in China and Japan from the British government. He designed Yokohama Consulate, and redesigned Yokohama Legation building.
-サトウ著『一外交官の見た明治維新』を読み直していますが、1866年から69年の幕末から明治維新までサトウはミットフォードとほぼ行動を共にし、その途中何人かの興味深い人物が登場してきます。その一人にクロスマン少佐がいます。クロスマンは陸軍工兵で、極東のイギリス外交施設建築の整備のためにやってきて、横浜の領事館と仮公使館を設計しました。1867年、彼はイギリス艦船に乗りサトウとミットフォードとともに長崎、薩摩、大阪を訪問していました。
August 10, 2018: Isabella Bird asked McVean advice for traveling Japan in 1877-78.
-McVean finished contract with Japanese government and returned to Scotland in June 1876 through USA. When he and wife stayed at Edinburgh, they met several times Isabella Bird, who asked McVean as "7 Atholl Crescent Edinburgh Feb 24/ 78, Dear Mr McVean. You kindly said that if I decide on going to Japan you would help me with introductions etc", and McVean replied as "Friday Mar 22, Writing Miss Bird letters of introduction to Japan friends." -マクヴェインは明治政府との雇用契約を終え、1876年4月、横浜を発ち、太平洋-北アメリカ-大西洋を渡り、同年6月にスコットランドに帰り着きました。エジンバラは妻マリーの実家があるところで、そこでしばらく滞在していた時、マクヴェイン夫妻はイザベラ･バード姉妹と数回会っていることが分かりました。バードはマクヴェイン夫妻の日本滞在体験を見聞きし、日本に大変興味を持ち、マクヴェインに助言と便宜の提供を求めました。それに対してマクヴェインは親切な手紙を書き送り、おそらく、イギリス公使のパークスと同書記官のガビンズ、さらに山形にいたフリーメーソン仲間のダラスを紹介したと思われます。<マクヴェインの友人たち>を参照願う。
September 10, 2018: Discovering of Familiy Line of Josiah Conderコンドル先生の家系調査を追加
-Josiah Conder's family line is not known at all, although it might affect Conder's childhood and career. His family is really interesting, as his grand fater was great publisher and his auntie was great civil engineer. See Entry <Anglo-Japanese><Conder-Smith>.
-コンドル先生の家系って、ほぼ40年前に簡単に調べられた情報が今でも流布しており、全然分かっていません。コンドル先生の生涯を考える上でこの家系調査は必須です。30年ほど前、コンドル先生を含めて同姓同名の著名人が3名もいることは知っていましたが、他の2名のことを調べたら、結構、建築に関係する仕事をしていたことがわかりました。<Anglo-Japanese><Conder-Smith>を参照願います.
December 7, 2017: Marvellous!!! Detailed Drawing of H.M.'s Office of Works
-I have looked for de Boinville's original drawings preserved in the National Archives among the WORKS collection long time, but not available there. I wonder that the WORKS did not submit the detailed drawings to the National Archives except Monrovia Consulate buildings. Details of door and widow frame works are so marvellous.
-ボアンヴィルが1880年代後半、イギリス工務局に勤めて在外イギリス大使館建築の営繕を担当していました。20年近く前から彼がひいた図面を工務局古文書の中で探していましたが、今回も見つかりませんでした。イギリス公文書館所蔵の工務局古文書コレクションにはすべての在外公館建築の図面が納められているわけではなく、また平面図と立面図があっても詳細図や施工図はまったくありません。今回、偶然モンロビアに建つ領事館建築の詳細図面を見つけたのですが、そのディテールがなんとすばらしいこと。
