イギリス海軍測量船シルヴィア号測量士官ジェームス･バットによる日本水彩画、1867年-1870年

・イギリス海軍測量船シルヴィア号はブローカー艦長の指揮により1867年暮れに横浜港に到着した。幕府と神戸、長崎、箱館を結ぶ水域測量を共同実施しようとしたが、明治維新のためそれは叶わなかった。シルヴィア号は独自に瀬戸内海を経て長崎までの測量を実施した。この艦船にはジェームス･ヘンリー･バットという若手測量師が乗船しており、彼は寄港地の日本の風景に魅了されてしまい、30枚を越える水彩画を残した。私は2018年9月にロンドンの海事博物館公文書館でマクヴェイン関連資料を調べている最中にこの遺品を発見し、ここに紹介するのは本邦初公開のはずです。

I. The HMS Sylvia in the Far East

シルヴィア号は5銃台を備えた695トン150馬力のスクリューで、1866年から1870年にブローカー艦長の指揮のもとで中国ステーションで水路測量を実施しました。バットは1866年10月に二等少佐に任命され、同艦に乗り込み、1870年には香港で下船しました。パール号は21銃台を備え1468トン400馬力のコルベットスクリュー船で、1866年5月からジョン･ロス艦長の指揮で中国ステーション配属になりました。パール号は測量船のシルヴィア号を護衛するために一緒に行動し、両船は1867年暮れに横浜港に到着しました。

シルヴィア号の副艦長としてマックスウェルが乗り込み、友人のコリン･マクヴェインに日本での仕事を紹介し、マクヴェインはエジンバラのスチブンソン事務所の選考を通り、1868年8月に灯台建設技術者として来日することにます。1869年暮れに艦長のブローカーが病気になり、マックスウェルが代わりに艦長となります。しかし、マックスウェルは、シルヴィア号に乗る前に、ニューファウンドランドの測量の指揮を執ることが決まっており、同年暮れにはセント･ジョンに艦長職を任せ、離日します。

修正：図中では、1870年2月に大島に寄航したとしましたが、正しくは「紀伊大島」です。46図で鯨を荷揚げしている港はこの大島港と考えられます（July 15, 2022）。

--The HMS Sylvia commanded by Captain Brooker arrived at Yokohama port in the end of 1867 to negotiate joint hydrographic survey along sea routes to Kobe, Nagasaki and Hakodate with the Shogunate. The attempt was failed due to the imperial revolution, and the Sylvia made sole survey to Nagasaki. One of the staffs named James Henry Butt was impressed by Japanese scenery very much, and could not help painting them whenever he called on. He was a very talented painter as well as surveyor.

--In September 2018 when I was searching for documents related to McVean at the archives of the Royal Maritime Museum, London, I found James Butt's paintings. I am so surprised that the very fine water-coloured paintings are being preserved in good condition there. We can find how Butt was impressed by Japanese sceneries.

I. The HMS Sylvia in the Far East

Sylvia' was a 5-gun screw survey vessel of 695 tons, 150 HP, sent to do hydrographic survey work on the China Station under Brooker from 1866 to 1870 and then under subsequent commanders. Butt was appointed second lieutenant in October 1866, but became third when a more senior man, Swinton Holland, joined her from November 1869. He left her at Hong Kong in 1870. The 'Pearl' was a 21-gun screw corvette of 1469 tons, 400 HP, commissioned for the China Station under Captain John F. Ross from May 1866. They appear to have been operating together, 'Pearl' doubtless to ensure the safety of 'Sylvia', given this was a disturbed period in Japan: see also PAJ2071 for 'Pearl'.

CORRECTION: In the diagram, the ship was referred to as calling at Oshima in February 1870, but the correct name is 'Kii Oshima'; the port where the whales are unloaded in chart 46 is thought to be this Oshima port (July 15, 2022).

II. James Henry Butt, 1844-1936.

--During this time the 'Sylvia' - a 5-gun, 695-ton screw survey vessel under Commander Edward Wolfe Brooker (1827–70) ‘did good work on the coast of Formosa, on the west coast of Nipon [Japan] between Nagasaki and Simonoseki, in the inland sea of Japan, and at the entrance to the river Min in China’ (L. S. Dawson, 'Memoirs of Hydrography', 1885, p. 162).

Butt was born in the parish of St John, Gloucester, in 1844, second child and eldest son of Henry Hugh Butt, an accountant in that city, and his wife Anne Catherine Withey, who married at Stroud in 1841. He probably entered the Navy about 1857-8 and was commissioned acting lieutenant from acting sub-lieutenant on 18 September 1865. He was appointed 'Sylvia‘s' second lieutenant on 11 October 1866, a position he held until autumn 1869 when Brooker was invalided home from Yokohama. The first lieutenant, James W. Gambier, then took over temporary command and Butt became third lieutenant under a new second until the ship paid off at Hong Kong on 6 May 1870, though she was immediately re-commissioned with a new crew for continuing Eastern service.

※崎津湾内部から西側に見える夕日を描いている。ここは隠れキリシタンの里で、シルヴィア号艦長ブローカーはそのことを知って、ここに帰港したと思われる。画家バットの手前に数名の日本人漁師たちがおり、シルヴィア号とパール号を歓迎しているようにみえる。

※1870年1月から2月にかけてシルヴィア号は江戸湾から伊豆半島沿岸にいたので、この大島は伊豆大島以外に考えられない。No.46は伊豆大島の波浮港と考えられる。

※シルヴィア号は少なくとも3回瀬戸内海を航行しており、日本人水先案内人に鈍川を紹介され、艦員が休養にきたのであろう。釣り人らしき人影が見える。

※1870年2月、横浜から瀬戸内に向かう途中、この大島に寄ったのだと思われる。大島としか書かれていないが、図手前に鯨解体場、図右手に荷揚場、高い山が遠くに見えるので、紀伊大島の大島港と考えられる。マクヴェインは、1869年5月に神子元島からブランデルと当地にやってきて一泊し、「なんて美しい土地なんだ。港はどんな天候でも安全である」と述べ、またここで、村人に後をつけ回され、服だけならいざしらず、髭まで触りまくられ、最後は止めてくれと言って拳をあげなければならないほどだった。まれびと神話の人になったのかもしれない（2022年11月16日加筆）。
