There is a single Roland MDX-40A rotary engraver located in classroom 1G2. This is controlled by a dedicated PC.
The machine is generally used by staff, however students in Key Stage 4 studying for Product Design and Engineering are given opportunities to observe, set-up and operate it under supervision for quality control reasons.
This is a video demonstrating the MDX40 rotary engraver carrying out a 'roughing' toolpath pass. This is the first stage of manufacture. It is done quickly with less accuracy and overlaps between tool passes. It is not intended to create fine details, just machine out the large gaps in the component. After a roughing pass, it is necessary to carry out next a 'finishing' and finally a 'cut-out' pass.
This video demonstrates how various work holding attachments can be used with the MDX 40.
