This booklet contains all the documentation you will need to complete the unit. It contains the drawings (see larger, correctly oriented version below) a list of the tasks and evidence you will need to attempt and any forms you have to complete.
We have split up the candidate pack to make it easier for you to understand what you need to do by breaking things down a bit.
This document contains the full list of things you are expected to complete.
In 2024, candidates have been provided with the following brief (which is different every year):
"Following on from the testing of the phone rig with a range of users, the following points have been highlighted.
The current design only allows for the phone to be held in one fixed position. Users feel that a method to hold and adjust the phone in a range of positions would improve the function of the design by allowing photographs to be taken without the need to move the whole rig.
Users also stated that having the option to raise or lower the phone height would also be beneficial.
You have been commissioned to use the engineering information provided for Unit 1 and the design specification included with this brief as a starting point to design a solution to allow the phone to be fixed in a range of positions as well as being able to be raised a maximum of 50mm above the rig frame."
This is a design task. There is no requirement for modifying or producing the engineered design solution.
You should:
Consider the functions of product features, and suggest other engineered products that have similar functional properties and needs, considering mechanical and component properties.
Design and present a range of solutions that meet the criteria and evaluate each design for its suitability.
Create engineering drawings of the final proposal.
Produce a production specification for a third party to produce the proposed modifications.
Calculate the cost of materials and production rates for the design solution
Advise a third-party manufacturer about materials and processes to be used in the making of your designed prototype.
The modified solution must allow the phone to be held securely.
The design should have a quick release method to remove the phone from the rig.
The phone should be able to be locked in a range of angles to allow flexibility in use.
There must be a 50mm height adjustment available in the final solution.
The phone must not be damaged whilst in use or when being fixed to the rig.
It is essential that when analysing existing products as part of your investigation (BEFORE writing your own engineering specification), that you consider the FUNCTION of how these products work (i.e. what engineered features enable the product to meet its PRIMARY FUNCTION.

You may wish to use this CAD model as a starting point to develop your own modifications and improvements according to the brief above.
INSTRUCTIONS Use the following templates to guide you through what you must include in your coursework to be successful .
You MUST include the following details on each page , but display them in your own creative, well presented and organised way.
YOU MUST NOT COPY THEM! All of your work has to be unique.
