The influence of design through the ages
It is common for design to follow fashions, or trends. This is where the styles, methods and materials follow a set of 'unwritten rules'. For example have you noticed how every phone that comes out is thin, rectangular with rounded corners and with few or no visible buttons on its front face? You can thank Apple for that. These are often called design movements.
The influence of some design movements can last years or even decades, some only a short period. Some are just a passing 'fad'.
These videos will give you a nice, brief introduction to some of the major design movements from the 20th century.
You will notice that there is a huge cross-over between art, architecture and design. This is because many of the influences permeate all areas of design. It is very common for one area e.g. art to influence another, e.g. product design and vice versa. Many of the worlds most famous designers were also architects and artists. James Dyson for example originally studied art before becoming an industrial designer and engineer!
