Engineering a solution
To understand how batteries convert chemical energy into electrical potential energy.
To appreciate how batteries could be one of the sustainable solutions too the worlds energy needs.
So that can make smart choices about my energy needs.
So that I can calculate and choose suitable batteries for my own electronics projects
Watch the video to learn about the importance of batteries to the future of the world's energy supply.
The animations below demonstrate how electrons move around within a battery when it is connected in a circuit. Pay attention to the direction of the electrons in the different cycles, charge and discharge.
Note when the battery is not connected, there is no electron flow.
This is a 3d CAD (computer aided design) model of the actual battery chargers circuit which Mr Berry has built for you. Its consists of the following components (parts):
TP4056 USB charging module circuit.
DC 3 volt to 5 volt, 1 amp voltage regulator.
A 3 pole toggle switch to switch between charging battery and drawing from battery.
A 18650 (form factor) 3.7 volt rechargeable battery.
A diode to prevent a backwards current from the battery returning to the charging circuit (when the battery is charged) and damaging it. A diode acts as a one-way valve for electrical current.
We will be using this circuit to see if we can successfully charge a battery (so that we can run our own phones or tablets off of it), using a selection of different renewable sources, wind, solar, etc. We will see which is the most reliable for us.
