The D&T department occasionally uses manual hand drills and has a battery drill which is regularly used by staff and students. Each type of drill is different and must be taught / demonstrated separately.
As with all tools and equipment used by pupils, they are expected to observe a practical demonstration before being authorised to use them themselves. Learners must prove that they can use them safely and competently.
The condition of all hand tools are regularly checked by the D&T technician. Any defective equipment must be reported to the technician so that they can be repaired or taken out of service and replaced.
The material to be used drilled must be appropriate for the use of the manual hand drill. Where the battery drill is to be used the torque setting must be put on the minimum setting and adjusted as required.
Suitable methods of workholding must be used at all times to reduce the risk of injuries.
