Addition is about putting things together, combining them to make a 'new whole'. By adding two numbers together you are carrying out a 'sum'. The 'sum' of a series of numbers is all those numbers added together. Addition is the opposite of subtraction.
Subtraction is about breaking a whole number into smaller parts. By subtracting two numbers, one from another, the result is called the 'difference'. Thus the 'difference' of a subtraction is what is left over when you take away (subtract) one number from another. Subtraction is the opposite of addition.
You should have a piece of paper and a pencil and write your notes, including all steps in your calculation. When you have your final answer you can then enter it into the app to check it. Then compare your method with the one in the app to see if they are the same.
Multiplication is a way of carrying out repeated addition really quickly, skipping all those steps to get the the answer much quicker than would be possible if you were adding many numbers together manually, one at a time. Multiplication is the opposite of division.
Before anyone can carry out large multiplications, they need to be able to memorise their 'times tables'. Most adults should be able to remember up to their 12x table. This tool will help you visualise, memorise and practice up to 15x and test yourself.
The grid technique is a really visual and easy to understand way of carrying out long multiplications.
This tool will carry out and help you learn how to do multiplications up to 9999 x 9999.
Division is a way of carrying out repeated subtraction really quickly, skipping all those steps to get the the answer much quicker than would be possible if you were taking away many numbers together manually, one at a time. Division is the opposite of multiplication.
