What is a risk assessment?
Risk assessments are important because they:
1. Prevent accidents and injuries
They help teachers, workers, and students understand what could go wrong and how to stop it.
2. Protect everyone involved
They make sure that people using tools, machines or equipment know how to stay safe.
3. Make activities safer
Whether it’s using a 3D printer, working in a workshop, or doing a school experiment, a risk assessment helps reduce danger.
4. Follow the law
Workplaces and schools must, by law, check risks to keep people safe.
5. Teach responsibility
They encourage people to think ahead, make safer choices, and understand how to handle hazards properly.
A hazard is anything that has the potential to cause harm. It could be an object, a substance, a situation, or an activity.
Examples:
A sharp tool
A hot 3D printer nozzle
Slippery floors
Electricity
In simple terms:
➡️ A hazard = something that is dangerous.
A risk is the chance or likelihood that the hazard will actually cause harm, and how serious that harm could be.
Examples:
The risk of cutting yourself on a sharp tool
The risk of burning your skin on a 3D printer nozzle
The risk of slipping on a wet floor
In simple terms:
➡️ A risk = how likely it is that someone will get hurt, and how badly.
